Hanukkah · Spiritual Renewal · Rebirth · Divine Service

“The name ‘Chanuka’ signifies that they accepted upon themselves the yoke of the Kingdom of Heaven anew.”

The Sefat Emet explains that Chanuka represents a renewed commitment to divine service, as if beginning again.

“For every exile is like a pregnancy, in which something new must be born.”

Exile is understood as a gestational process that prepares for spiritual renewal.

“Therefore there are birth pangs, as it is written: ‘Like a pregnant woman nearing birth…’”

Just as birth is preceded by struggle, redemption is preceded by difficulty.

“And so it is taught concerning the verse ‘the iron furnace of Egypt,’ likening it to the difficulty of bringing a child forth from the womb.”

The Egyptian exile is interpreted as a crucible that forged Israel just as the womb shapes the unborn child.

“And as it is said: a convert is like a newborn child.”

Spiritual transformation is comparable to an entirely new birth.

“Thus, after we emerged from under the dominion of Greece and entered again into the category of servants of God, there was a new path requiring consecration.”

The defeat of Greek oppression opened a new spiritual beginning that required ‘chanukah’—dedication and re-education.

“And we also find that when God performs a miracle for Israel and they sing praise, their sins are forgiven— as in Parashat Beshalach and in the Song of Deborah.”

Song and gratitude in response to divine salvation bring about atonement.

“So too here: by establishing Hallel and thanksgiving, all was forgiven and they became like a new creation.”

Chanuka’s praise and gratitude renew the people spiritually, as if they were recreated.

Summary: Chanuka marks a rebirth after exile—an emergence from gestation into new spiritual life, completed through gratitude, song, and renewed dedication to God.
