Tribal Gates of Holiness

Chanukah · תרמ"ב - תרמ"ג (1881) · Essay 11

Twelve Tribes · Hanukkah · Judah and Joseph · Spiritual Gates · Divine Service

And behold, corresponding to the thirteen gates mentioned above are the twelve tribes, for each one has its own special gate in the Temple above and below.

The Rebbe teaches that the tribes serve as distinct channels of holiness, each with its unique spiritual path both in the heavenly and earthly sanctuaries.

For they guard the entrances, the twelve borders delineated in the inheritance of the Land of Israel, as is known from holy books.

The tribes serve as guardians of Israel’s spiritual boundaries, reflecting the sacred geography of the land.

For the level of the Patriarchs is above this world.

The Patriarchs represent a transcendent spiritual root beyond worldly limitation.

But the tribes stand at the point where divine vitality spreads into nature, the realm of boundaries.

The tribes channel higher light into structured, lived reality.

And corresponding to this are the twelve months, which were fit to be festivals, but through sin we did not merit them, as the Sages taught.

The months intrinsically contain potential holiness, diminished through human failing.

And the reason, as said above, is that these festivals were closer to nature, and therefore the power of sin ruled over them.

Their nearness to the natural realm made them more susceptible to corruption.

However, on Chanuka there is a slight opening of these gates; therefore on Chanuka we read the offerings of the princes, for in the time of the Mishkan the princes opened these very gates.

Chanuka restores a measure of access to the tribal channels of holiness, echoed in the dedication offerings.

And the essence of the tribes is the aspects of Joseph and Judah.

These two represent the core spiritual forces within Israel.

The covenant of the body and the covenant of the tongue.

Joseph embodies physical sanctity; Judah embodies holy speech.

And Judah is the aspect of the mouth—“Hear, O Lord, the voice of Judah”—the aspect of David, the sweet singer of Israel.

Judah connects to the voice of prayer and song, embodied in King David.

As it is written, “The voice is the voice of Jacob”—these are the voices of Torah and prayer.

The spiritual power of Jacob manifests through holy speech.

“Praised by the mouth of His people”—this refers to King David, who is called “the mouth.”

David epitomizes expression of divine praise.

“Glorified and exalted by the tongue of His pious ones”—this is the aspect of Joseph the righteous, the aspect of Hallel, a high level that comes from the elevation of the mind.

Joseph represents exalted praise emerging from deep spiritual understanding.

And all the conflict between Judah and Joseph was entirely for the sake of Heaven.

Their tension expressed two holy forces striving toward divine service.

And this conflict must exist in every Jew—the aspect of “running and returning,” love and awe.

A person must balance ascent and grounding, yearning and reverence.

For through the joining of these two qualities, the gate opens for good.

Spiritual completeness comes through harmonizing both forces.

The Sefat Emet teaches that the twelve tribes, months, and gates reflect channels of divine flow into structured reality. Chanuka uniquely reopens these channels, centered on the harmonized forces of Joseph and Judah—sanctity of body and sanctity of speech, Hallel and prayer, love and awe—whose balance opens the inner spiritual gate.
