Transcending Natural Order

Chanukah · תרמ"ב - תרמ"ג (1881) · Essay 12

Menorah · Divine Light · Israel · Supernatural Guidance · Sanctuary

In the Gemara it asks: “Does He need its light? After all, for forty years….”

The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Talmudic question: the Menorah is not for God’s illumination, since Israel traveled for forty years guided by a divine light.

The matter is that the Menorah encompassed the entire governance of the world, corresponding to the seven days of the week, the seven branches of the Menorah.

The Menorah symbolizes the divine ordering of creation, with each branch corresponding to one of the seven foundational rhythms of the world.

However, there was no need for this mode of governance.

During the wilderness period, Israel existed beyond ordinary cosmic structure, so the Menorah’s symbolic function was not required for them.

For the attachment of Israel is above all nature, just as they walked for forty years by His light, beyond nature.

Their intimacy with the divine placed them in a supernatural state, receiving direct illumination rather than mediated light.

And this is the distinction between “for its light” and “by His light.”

“Its light” refers to the natural-symbolic illumination of the Menorah, while “His light” refers to direct divine radiance.

Therefore it is written: “Outside… he shall arrange…”

The Menorah’s placement and arrangement signify that its illumination relates to the outer world, not to the inner sanctum of divine intimacy.

For the Ark and the Cherubim were inside.

The Ark and Cherubim represent the inner realm of direct divine presence, contrasting with the Menorah’s outward-facing role.

Rather, the procedure done with the Menorah was so that Israel would illuminate the entire world, as in “He declared the power of His deeds… to give them the inheritance of nations.”

The Menorah empowers Israel to radiate divine awareness outward, illuminating creation and preparing the nations to recognize God’s sovereignty.

Summary: The Menorah symbolizes the divine ordering of nature, while Israel’s true light is supernatural, stemming from direct attachment to God. Though they did not need the Menorah’s natural illumination, its service exists so that Israel can shine divine awareness outward to the world.
