קבעום ועשאום י"ט בהלל והודאה.

“They established them and made them a festival through Hallel and thanksgiving.”

The Sefat Emet teaches that the essence of Chanuka was fixed through the spiritual powers of praise and gratitude.

דאיתא במדרש תהלים הודו לה' כל"ח חסד שהקב"ה עושה לבנ"י אינו לשנה ושנתים רק לעולם כמ"ש חסדי ה' כי לא תמנו וכ"כ וחסד ה' מעולם ועד עולם כו' ע"ש.

As it is stated in Midrash Tehillim: “Give thanks to the Lord, for His kindness endures forever.” The kindness that the Holy One does for Israel is not for a year or two, but forever, as it is written: “The kindnesses of the Lord indeed never cease,” and also: “The kindness of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting,” etc.

The Midrash emphasizes that divine kindness is not temporary but eternal, forming the basis for continual gratitude.

פי' שע"י הלל והודאה יכולין לעורר כח הנס והחסד לעולם.

This means that through Hallel and thanksgiving one can awaken the power of the miracle and kindness forever.

Gratitude activates and draws forth the ongoing spiritual force of past miracles.

לכן הודו לה' יאמר נא ישראל. יראי ה' כו' שבכוחם לעורר אלה החסדים תמיד בכח הודאה ובכח המצות המיוחדים לאלה הנסים כמ"ש לזוכרי פקודיו לעשותם.

Therefore, “Give thanks to the Lord, let Israel say… let those who fear the Lord say,” for they have the power to continually awaken these kindnesses through gratitude and through the commandments connected to these miracles, as it is written: “To those who remember His precepts to perform them.”

Israel, and especially those who are God-revering, can continually draw down divine kindness through praise and mitzvot rooted in the miracles.

להם נמצא חסד ה' מעולם ועד עולם.

For them, the kindness of the Lord is found from everlasting to everlasting.

Those who live with remembrance and gratitude access the eternal current of divine chesed.

וכמו כן הי' באותו הדור שבכח הלל והודאה קבעוהו לדורות.

And so it was in that generation: through the power of Hallel and thanksgiving they established it for all generations.

The Maccabees anchored Chanuka eternally through their praise and thanks.

ואיתא בגמרא הלל יש בו לשעבר ולעתיד כו'.

And the Gemara states: Hallel contains within it what pertains to the past and to the future.

Hallel bridges past miracles and future redemption.

פי' שבכח ההלל לעורר הנסים והחסדים שהקב"ה עשה לנו כבר.

This means that through Hallel one can awaken the miracles and kindnesses that God has already done for us.

Praise reactivates and renews past salvations.

וגם מה שעתיד לעשות לנו כמ"ש במ"א מזה כי לפניו ית' עבר ועתיד הכל אחד.

And also those that He will yet perform for us, as explained elsewhere, for before Him, blessed be He, past and future are one.

In God’s perspective, all time is unified, allowing future miracles to be awakened through present praise.

וכאשר עשה לאבותינו החסדים הי' ישועה לכל הדורות ויש לכל הדורות חלק בהם.

And when He performed kindnesses for our ancestors, there was salvation for all generations, and all generations have a share in them.

Every miracle for the ancestors contains blessing for all future generations.

רק כפי מה שמצויר הנס והחסד בעיני האדם כך מתעורר אצלו החלק השייך לו וכן בכלל הדור.

Only according to how the miracle and kindness are envisioned by a person does his portion awaken, and so it is for each generation as a whole.

The extent of one's perception determines how much of the miracle he can access.

וחז"ל רמזו לנו שע"י הלל והודאה נוכל להתדבק בהנס.

And the Sages hinted to us that through Hallel and thanksgiving we can attach ourselves to the miracle.

Praise is the means by which we cleave to the spiritual essence of the miracle itself.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Hallel and thanksgiving have the power to draw forth eternal divine kindness, reawaken past miracles, and connect us to future redemption. Chanuka was established through these spiritual forces, which remain accessible in every generation.
