Inner Light and Humble Gratitude

קבעום ועשאום י"ט בהלל והודאה.
“They established them and made them a festival with Hallel and thanksgiving.”
The Sefat Emet begins by explaining that the essence of Chanuka is expressed through two modes of service: praise and gratitude.
הלל הוא אור והשמחה.
“Hallel is light and joy.”
Hallel represents illumination of the soul and the joy that comes from spiritual clarity.
והודאה הוא יראה והכנעה.
“And thanksgiving is awe and humility.”
Gratitude reflects the soul’s movement toward reverence and inward submission before God.
כי כך הוא המדה כשמתרומם האדם ומתוך ההשגה בא להכנעה ביותר.
“For this is the measure: when a person is elevated, from within that understanding he comes to even greater humility.”
True spiritual ascent naturally produces deeper humility, not pride.
הוא סימן שהיא אהבה אמיתיות של קיימא.
“This is a sign that it is a true and enduring love.”
Lasting love of God manifests as humility rather than self‑inflation.
וכ"כ יראת ה' טהורה עומדת לעד שדבר המביא לידי יראה הוא של קיימא.
“Thus it says: ‘The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever,’ for that which brings a person to awe is enduring.”
Awe rooted in clarity and purity is stable and lasting.
וכך מדתן של בנ"י כשהקב"ה מאיר להם וגואל אותם מכניעין את עצמם ביותר.
“So is the nature of Israel: when God shines upon them and redeems them, they humble themselves even more.”
Redemption produces not arrogance but increased submission to God.
וז"ש הללוי' הללו עבדי ה' שמתוך הלל נכנעין ומקבלין העבדות ביותר.
“Thus it says: ‘Hallelu‑Yah, praise the Lord, O servants of the Lord,’ meaning that through Hallel they become humbled and accept servitude even more.”
Praise heightens awareness of God, leading to deeper acceptance of divine service.
ולכן לשנה שראו שע"י הגאולה שנתרוממו נכנעין ג"כ וראו שהוא דבר של קיימא קבעום כו' בהלל והודאה.
“Therefore, the following year, when they saw that through the redemption their elevation also brought humility, and that it was enduring, they established the days with Hallel and thanksgiving.”
The combination of uplift and humility proved lasting, forming the foundation for establishing Chanuka.
וזהו ענין מוסיף והולך פוחת והולך שניהם אמת שבכל יום ויום מימי חנוכה צריכין להתרומם ולהתלהב בעבודת השי"ת ואהבתו.
“This is the matter of ‘increasing’ and ‘decreasing’: both are true, for each day of Chanuka one must rise and be enflamed in the service of God and His love.”
The dispute between increasing or decreasing lights reflects two valid modes: ascent in love and intensification of awe.
ולהכנע ג"כ בכל יום ויום ביותר.
“And also to become more humbled each day.”
Spiritual elevation must be matched by increasing humility.
לכן ב"ש אומרים פוחת שהם בחי' הגבורה והיראה וב"ה באהבה וחסד כידוע.
“Therefore Beit Shammai say ‘decreasing,’ which corresponds to gevurah and awe, while Beit Hillel speak from the aspect of love and kindness, as is known.”
The two positions reflect two divine attributes: gevurah (awe) decreasing, and chesed (love) increasing.
והאמת הוא כי הלל הוא הארת הנפש והנשמה.
“The truth is that Hallel is the illumination of the soul and spirit.”
Praise draws forth inner spiritual light.
וכמו שהנפש מתגבר כך הגוף נכנע.
“And as the soul strengthens, the body becomes humbled.”
Greater spiritual vitality subdues bodily resistance.
והודאה הוא בגוף.
“And thanksgiving is in the body.”
Gratitude is expressed through the physical dimension of human service.
מודים מכלל דפליגי.
“‘They say: we give thanks’ implies there is disagreement.”
The body and soul debate within a person; thanksgiving reconciles this conflict.
שהגוף הוא בעל מחלוקת להנפש ובימים אלו מכניע עצמו אל הנשמה.
“For the body is in conflict with the soul, and in these days it subdues itself to the soul.”
During Chanuka the body aligns with the soul’s light, resolving their tension.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Chanuka unites praise and gratitude, elevation and humility. Each day brings growing love and awe, as the soul illuminates and the body submits to higher purpose.
