Light of Mitzvot and Soul
Mitzvot · Hanukkah Lights · Soul · Divine Illumination
The mitzvah and the miracle in the lights.
The Sefat Emet opens by noting that both the commandment of the Chanuka lights and the miracle relate to the theme of illumination.
It is stated: “And darkness was upon the face of the deep” – this refers to Greece, which darkened the eyes of Israel.
Grecian influence is described as a force of spiritual darkness that dimmed Israel’s inner sight.
For Israel cannot exist without mitzvot, as it is written: “A mitzvah is a lamp.”
The mitzvot are essential to Israel’s spiritual vitality, serving as the source of inner light.
For a person is composed of heaven and earth.
The human being is a fusion of the spiritual and the physical.
The soul is from heaven, and the body is from earth.
This duality creates tension and the need for illumination.
And as it is written, “And the earth was chaos and void…” so it is with a person, whose soul is clothed in a physical body and organs, and they are dark.
The body on its own is compared to primordial chaos, lacking spiritual clarity.
But the spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters.
Divine spirit hovers over potential points of illumination.
The “face of the waters” refers to the positive and negative commandments.
The mitzvot are the waters upon which divine spirit rests.
And they illuminate all the limbs and sinews from within the darkness.
The mitzvot channel divine light into the physical structure of the human being.
And so it is written: “Your word is a lamp to my feet.”
Torah provides guidance specifically into the lowest, material aspects of life.
“My feet” refers to the lowest level, which is the body.
The body is the realm most in need of illumination.
And its repair is through the mitzvot.
Mitzvot refine and elevate the physical dimension.
“A light to my path” is the Torah itself, corresponding to the level of the soul.
Torah provides the higher, soul-level illumination beyond the bodily repair of mitzvot.
Regarding this it is written afterwards: “Let there be light.”
This primordial light corresponds to the revelation of Torah.
And the mitzvot are the “face of the waters” and repair the body.
The mitzvot act specifically upon the physical structure.
And this is “a lamp for a person and his household,” meaning that one should sense illumination within his soul.
The Chanuka lamp awakens inner spiritual light.
“A person and his household” – it is taught that the man has the letter Yod, and the woman the letter Heh.
Together they form part of the divine name.
And through the mitzvot and the repair of the body, the Yod imprinted in his soul shines within him.
Mitzvot awaken the latent divine spark.
And it is written: “From the straits I called to Yah; He answered me with the expansiveness of Yah.”
Calling from constriction leads to expanded divine revelation.
“Expansiveness” has the numerical value of “lamp,” and it is the spreading of those two letters through the 248 limbs.
The divine letters expand through the entire human frame via mitzvot.
For the power of the soul is always within a person, but it is in constriction and concealment.
The soul is inherently present yet obscured.
And when one merits illumination through the 248 mitzvot…
The mitzvot activate the soul’s light.
Then the effects of those letters expand and spread.
The divine imprint becomes manifest throughout the person.
Now, ten times Heh equals fifty.
A numeric meditation connecting letters and expansion.
And in the spelled-out form of Yod, twice Heh equals two hundred.
This continues the numeric symbolism.
Thus “the expansiveness of Yah” equals “lamp.”
The state of expanded divine presence is identical with illumination.
And this is through the mitzvot, as the Zohar states: “Mitzvah” contains the letters of the Divine Name.
Mitzvot reveal the hidden divine presence.
The letters Vav–Heh are in a state of revelation.
The lower letters of the Name become manifest through action.
And the letters Mem–Tzadi are an interchange of those letters.
A symbolic transformation indicating hiddenness moving toward revelation.
For through the mitzvot they come to revelation, as explained above.
Mitzvot draw forth the concealed light into manifestation.
The Sefat Emet teaches that Chanuka light reflects the dynamic by which mitzvot illuminate the body, expand the soul’s hidden letters, and reveal divine presence within human life.
