Eternal Light of the Chanukah Offering

Chanukah · תרנ"ז (1896) · Essay 6

Chanukah · Nesiim · Aaron · Levi · Sanctuary

“On Chanuka we read about the tribal princes.”

The Sefat Emet opens by noting that the Torah reading for Chanuka comes from the offerings of the tribal leaders.

“As it is written: ‘This is the dedication of the altar.’”

The word ‘this’ (zot) suggests something enduring and permanently established.

‘This’ implies something eternal, and the Midrash in Naso teaches that God showed each tribe what would be within its portion until the days of the Messiah.

Thus, the dedication offerings were not momentary; they expressed each tribe’s eternal spiritual role.

Therefore, the offering of the princes served as a preparation for all generations.

Their offerings laid spiritual groundwork that continues to influence Israel’s service.

The Midrash in Beha’alotekha states that God consoled Aaron and his tribe for not participating in that dedication, telling him: their offering was temporary, but yours endures forever.

Aaron’s service, particularly the lighting of the menorah, had an eternal quality surpassing the princes’ offerings.

This means that Aaron and the tribe of Levi, chosen from all the tribes, established the princes’ dedication to be everlasting.

Through their spiritual elevation, they gave permanence to what the princes initiated.

For in truth the princes brought their offerings on their own, as the Midrash says regarding “take from them”—meaning the initiative came from them.

Their act arose from their own inspiration, not by command.

But Aaron elevated their offering to its root, so that it would become something lasting forever.

Aaron provided the spiritual channel enabling their initiative to reach enduring holiness.

Therefore, through the Chanuka lights, illumination is awakened from that original dedication.

The lamps we light draw from the eternal sanctity established by Aaron, rooted in the princes’ offerings.

Summary: The offerings of the tribal princes contained eternal potential, which Aaron and the Levites elevated into lasting holiness. The light of Chanuka rekindles that primeval dedication in every generation.
