Spiritual Renewal and Zeal

Chanukah · תרנ"ט (1898) · Essay 2

Mezuzah · Hanukkah · Forgetfulness · Habit · Spiritual Awakening

“A mezuzah is on the right, and the Chanukah light on the left.”

The Sefat Emet begins by contrasting the mezuzah and the Chanukah lamp, each placed on a different side, hinting at different spiritual functions.

“For the wicked sought to make them forget Your Torah.”

The Greek decrees aimed specifically at inducing forgetfulness of Torah.

“And the mezuzah serves to remind a person of God’s Torah and His commandments.”

The mezuzah is fundamentally an antidote to forgetting—its presence continually awakens awareness of God.

As it is written: “Your word is a lamp for my feet.”

Divine instruction illuminates a person’s path, countering the dullness of habit.

And it is stated: “That the foot will cease from the marketplace.”

This refers to interrupting habitual, worldly movement.

And my grandfather, of blessed memory, explained that this means nullifying habit and natural automatism.

Spiritual growth requires breaking the grip of routine.

For the “feet” represent the lowest levels, most immersed in nature and habit, and this causes forgetfulness.

Physicality and routine drag consciousness downward, leading to spiritual amnesia.

And the general idea is as it is written: “And he touched the hollow of his thigh.”

This episode symbolizes damage to the lower faculties.

This is the aspect of the sciatic nerve, from which forgetfulness of the service of the Master arises.

The wound at the “thigh” alludes to impairment in consistent divine service.

And the mezuzah is on the right, as it is said: “The Eternal One of Israel does not lie.”

The right side symbolizes permanence and unchanging steadfastness.

Therefore it is fixed permanently forever.

The mezuzah expresses enduring stability.

But the left side had not yet been rectified; only in the days of Chanukah was the left also repaired.

The Chanukah light brings rectification to the weaker, less stable aspect of spiritual life.

And it is taught that in the phrase “slaughter the slaughter and prepare,” there is a hint to the letters of Chanukah.

Preparation and readiness are embedded in the very name of the festival.

And the Gemara states: “And prepare—remove the sciatic nerve before them.”

The same word ‘prepare’ links Chanukah with rectifying the flaw symbolized by the sciatic nerve.

And it is all one idea, for preparation means zeal.

True preparation is energetic readiness for holiness.

“Prepare to meet your God, O Israel.”

Preparation is an act of awakening from spiritual sleep.

The opposite of forgetfulness is not performing the mitzvah by habit, but with renewal and enthusiasm each time, with zeal.

Chanukah teaches the power of constant spiritual renewal, breaking the deadness of habit.

Summary: The Sefat Emet contrasts mezuzah (right, permanence) with the Chanukah light (left, needing rectification). Forgetfulness stems from habit and physicality (“feet”). Chanukah brings zeal, renewal, and the repair of routine-bound spiritual decline.
