עדות ביהוסף שמו כו' במדרש כי בא גבריאל ולימד אותו שבעים לשון לא הוי גמיר הוסיף לו ה' בשמו וגמיר.
“‘Testimony in Joseph was established…’ The Midrash says that Gabriel came and taught him the seventy languages, but he did not learn them until a letter Heh was added to his name, and then he learned.”
The Sefat Emet cites the Midrash that Joseph was unable to master the seventy languages until God added the letter Heh to his name, granting him this capacity.
ותמוה חדא כי מה תורה הוא זו לידע ע' לשון.
“It is puzzling: What kind of Torah‑teaching is it to know seventy languages?”
He raises the question: Why would Torah wisdom require mastery of foreign languages?
ופרעה ידע.
“And Pharaoh knew them.”
He notes that even Pharaoh knew all seventy languages, making Joseph’s difficulty seem even more surprising.
ויוסף לא הי' יכול לידע.
“But Joseph could not learn them.”
Joseph's inability appears strange for one filled with divine wisdom.
וגם מה תועלת אות ה' בזה.
“And what benefit did the letter Heh provide?”
He questions how a single added letter could empower Joseph to learn all languages.
אכן יובן עפ"י המדרש הואיל משה באר כו' התורה בע' לשון פירשה להם.
“This can be understood according to the Midrash that Moses explained the Torah to them in seventy languages.”
The explanation begins: Torah itself encompasses all languages, as shown by Moses’ translation into all seventy.
כי כל הע' לשון מתפשטין מלשון הקודש.
“For all seventy languages extend from the Holy Tongue.”
Every language is seen as an outgrowth or branch of Hebrew, the primordial language.
כי התורה נותנת חיים לכל הלשונות.
“For the Torah gives life to all the languages.”
Torah is the animating force behind the multiplicity of human speech.
והם רק כמו לבושים כי המכוון אחד הוא.
“They are only like garments, for the inner intention is one.”
Different languages are merely outer clothing; they express one unified divine meaning.
רק הלשונות משונים בתנועותיהם אבל הן הדברים שנאמרו בתורה מתלבשין בכל אלו הלשונות.
“The languages differ only in their forms, but the words spoken in the Torah clothe themselves in all these languages.”
The content of Torah can manifest in any language, even though each language has unique sounds and structures.
ויוסף הצדיק שבא למלוך במצרים בכח התורה הי' צריך לידע ולקשר כל הלשונות בלשון הקודש.
“And Joseph the righteous, who came to rule Egypt through the power of the Torah, needed to know and connect all the languages to the Holy Tongue.”
Joseph’s leadership required the spiritual task of unifying the world’s languages back to their source in Hebrew.
והי' זה הכנה קודם גלות מצרים שהוא גלות ראשון שבישראל הי' צריך יוסף לשלוט על כל אלה הלשונות.
“This was a preparation before the Egyptian exile, the first exile of Israel, in which Joseph had to have dominion over all these languages.”
Joseph’s mastery of languages spiritually prepared Israel for the coming exile, giving him authority over the cultural forces of Egypt.
ולכן נתוסף לו אות ה' שבה' נברא העולם הזה כמ"ש בה' בראם.
“Therefore the letter Heh was added to him, for with the Heh this world was created, as it is said: ‘With the Heh He created them.’”
The Heh symbolizes the creative force of this world, granting Joseph access to all expressions of human language.
ולכן בכח אות הזה להמשיך כל הלשונות אחר חיות הפנימיות שהוא לשון הקודש כנ"ל.
“Thus through this letter he had the power to draw all languages after the inner vitality, which is the Holy Tongue.”
The Heh empowered Joseph to connect every language back to its spiritual root in Hebrew, unifying them through Torah.
Summary: All languages are garments extending from Hebrew, the soul-language enlivened by Torah. Joseph needed mastery over them to rule Egypt spiritually and prepare Israel for exile. The added Heh, symbol of creation, enabled him to bind all speech back to its divine source.
