Inner Divine Point in Israel

“In the verse: ‘Binding his foal to the vine, and his donkey's colt to the choice vine; he washes his garments in wine.’”
The Sefat Emet begins by opening the symbolic meaning of this blessing of Judah.
“For our sages said that the Community of Israel is called a ‘vine’ that does not accept grafting from another species.”
This teaches that Israel has an inner identity that cannot be altered or mixed with anything foreign.
“Meaning: a hidden point within every Jew that never changes, and this is called the vine.”
The essential Jewish soul-point remains constant and untouched.
“And this the Holy One placed in the very nature of the Jewish soul.”
This unchanging point is embedded by God in the soul’s natural makeup.
“And likewise, the good traits found in Israel are called ‘choice vine,’ as it says: ‘And I planted you a choice vine.’”
Just as the vine symbolizes the core soul, the ‘choice vine’ symbolizes Israel’s refined qualities.
“But a person’s work is to connect every awakening within him to this inner point.”
Spiritual effort means constantly returning one’s stirrings to that true core.
“And this is the meaning of ‘Binding his foal to the vine.’”
All external movements or impulses must be fastened to the inner divine identity.
“Meaning: the awakenings of a person’s entire soul.”
Every stirring of life-energy is included in this binding.
“To subjugate the body to the soul.”
The body becomes aligned with the soul’s purpose.
“And similarly, one must uphold his character traits according to the Torah, as said elsewhere: not that the refinement of traits be for self-improvement based on one’s own understanding, as though they are evidence of human wisdom.”
Ethical refinement must be Torah-driven, not ego-driven or based on secular notions of self-cultivation.
“But rather to become a vessel prepared for His service.”
The purpose of refining traits is to become able to serve God fully.
“For the Torah dwells in a body that is properly refined.”
Only a harmonized person can truly contain Torah.
“And if this is the intention, it endures forever.”
Actions done with this purpose attain permanence.
“For the Torah is called strength.”
Torah grants lasting firmness to all it touches.
“For anything done together with Torah and for its own sake—”
Torah-infused actions gain a unique durability.
“—endures.”
They become anchored in eternity.
“And this is ‘to the choice vine, his donkey’s colt,’ from the root meaning ‘strong,’ for the Torah is called strength, as above.”
The imagery of the ‘choice vine’ expresses the robustness endowed by Torah.
“‘He washes his garments in wine.’”
This refers to purification through spiritual vitality, symbolized by wine.
“This is the refinement of physical actions, which are like garments and adornments for the body when they are done in purity.”
Even mundane deeds become sanctified garments when performed with pure intention.
The Sefat Emet explains that Israel bears an immutable divine point, symbolized by the vine. One’s task is to bind all impulses, traits, and actions to this point through Torah, purifying both body and deeds so they become vessels for God's service.
