Preparing the Vessel for Torah

Ha'azinu · תרנ"ד (1893) · Essay 2

On the verse "Set your hearts ... for it is your life ..." (Devarim 32:46-47), Rashi writes that a person must direct his heart and his ear, and so too it is written in 'Tzuras HaBayis,' see there, and in the Sifri.

The Sfas Emes opens with the verse instructing Bnei Yisrael to set their hearts to the Torah, noting Rashi's point that one must engage both heart and ear, with parallel sources in the Sifri.

The matter is that the form of the Torah, the form of the Beis HaMikdash, and the form of Bnei Yisrael are all one and the same.

He establishes a foundational principle: the Torah, the Beis HaMikdash, and Bnei Yisrael share a single underlying spiritual blueprint or 'form.'

It is for this reason that the mitzvos were given, in order to refine the two hundred forty-eight limbs and the three hundred sixty-five sinews that are within a person.

Because a person mirrors this form, the mitzvos were given specifically to refine the 248 limbs and 365 sinews, which correspond to the count of the mitzvos.

And this is the avodah of a person in this world: to straighten and to direct all of his limbs toward the Torah through the power of the mitzvos.

A person's task in this world is to align all his limbs with the Torah, using the mitzvos as the tool to straighten and direct himself.

This is the hint in the teaching that 'mitzvos require kavanah,' for the whole purpose is to direct and to arrange the form of the person, so that he becomes a fitting vessel.

The requirement that mitzvos be done with kavanah teaches that their goal is to arrange a person's inner form and make him into a vessel prepared to receive Torah.

And in the future the light of the Torah will be revealed to a person according to the preparation of his form in this world.

In the future, the light of the Torah will shine upon a person in exact proportion to how well he prepared his 'form' through mitzvos in this world.

Regarding this our Chachamim said that this world is comparable to an antechamber, for the entire life of a person in this world is to perfect himself in the antechamber.

This explains the Mishnah's image of this world as an antechamber before the palace: life here is the time to perfect oneself in preparation.

And this is what the verse means, "for it is your life and the length of your days" (Devarim 32:47) — this refers back to "Set your hearts."

The phrase "it is your life and the length of your days" connects back to the command to "set your hearts," showing that life itself flows from this setting.

For the word "set" ("simu") is an expression of arranging and directing.

He explains that the word "simu" (set) carries the meaning of arranging and directing oneself in an ordered way.

And the entire creation of this world is solely for the sake of this arranging and preparation mentioned above.

The whole purpose of the creation of this world is nothing other than this work of arranging and preparing oneself.

And I have been brief here, for I have already written something along these lines.

The Sfas Emes closes by noting he is keeping this short because he has addressed similar themes elsewhere.

Summary: The Sfas Emes teaches that the Torah, the Beis HaMikdash, and Bnei Yisrael all share one underlying spiritual form, and that the mitzvos were given to refine the 248 limbs and 365 sinews of a person to match it. A person's avodah in this world is to straighten and direct all of his limbs toward the Torah through the power of the mitzvos, which is why mitzvos require kavanah — to arrange one's inner form and become a vessel fit to receive the light of the Torah. In the future, that light will be revealed to each person in exact measure to how he prepared himself here, which is why Chazal compared this world to an antechamber before the palace. Thus the verse's words "it is your life and the length of your days" connect back to "set your hearts," for "simu" means to arrange and direct oneself, and the very purpose of creation is this work of preparation.
