The Shofar, the Straight Path, and the Avos

Now, Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah.

The Sefas Emes begins by noting that Rosh Hashanah opens the Ten Days of Teshuvah.

For "God made man upright" (Koheles 7:29).

Man was originally created straight and upright, aligned with the ratzon Hashem.

And every Rosh Hashanah this straight path is renewed.

Each year, on the anniversary of man's creation, that original "straight path" is made fresh and available again.

Therefore we blow the shofar, to grasp hold of this path.

The shofar blast is a means of seizing and holding onto the renewed straight path.

And not to think further "many calculations," as it is brought in Pirkei d'Rabbi Eliezer: when Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him, ascended the mountain during the final forty days, they sounded the shofar — "Moshe has gone up the mountain" — so that they would not stray again after avodah zarah.

"Many calculations" (cheshbonos rabbim) are the crooked schemes that pull a person off the straight path. PdRE recounts that when Moshe went up for the last forty days, a shofar was sounded throughout the camp to keep the people from again being misled into idol worship, as had happened with the Egel.

So too we blow the shofar on Rosh Hashanah, to stand firm in this renewal, not to deviate again from the straight path.

Just as that shofar guarded against straying, the shofar of Rosh Hashanah anchors us in the renewed straightness so we do not veer off course.

This is the meaning of "Blow the shofar at the new moon (bachodesh)" (Tehillim 81:4).

The Sefas Emes reads "bachodesh" not only as "at the renewal of the moon" but as pointing to the renewal (hischadshus) of the straight path.

When the new path is renewed.

That is, precisely at the moment when the fresh straight path is renewed each year.

To grasp this renewal, to become "a peg fixed firm and faithful" (Yeshayahu 22:23).

The goal is to seize the renewal so firmly that one becomes like a deeply driven, reliable peg — unshakeable in his attachment to the straight path.

And Malchiyos, Zichronos, Shofaros — to grasp hold of the ways of the Avos.

The three central berachos of Mussaf each correspond to one of the Avos, and reciting them is a way to take hold of the paths the Avos forged.

Malchiyos is the aspect of Avraham Avinu, who acquired Heaven and earth for the Holy One and made His kingship known in the world.

Malchiyos (Kingship) corresponds to Avraham, who proclaimed Hashem as Master of Heaven and earth and spread awareness of His malchus among all people.

As it says: "for the sake of Avraham, who called You Master."

This alludes to the teaching that Avraham was the first to address Hashem as "Adon" (Master), establishing His kingship in the world.

Zichronos is the aspect of Yitzchak, whose ashes are heaped up as a perpetual remembrance.

Zichronos (Remembrances) corresponds to Yitzchak, whose readiness at the Akeidah is "as though his ashes lie heaped on the Mizbeiach," remembered forever before Hashem.

Now, all of the measures of the Holy One are "measure for measure."

The Sefas Emes invokes the principle that Hashem deals with a person middah k'neged middah — corresponding to that person's own conduct.

And because Yitzchak, peace be upon him, never forgot the Creator even for a single moment in the world.

Yitzchak held the Borei constantly in his awareness, never letting Him slip from mind even momentarily.

Correspondingly, his ashes are forever a remembrance.

Measure for measure, because Yitzchak always "remembered" Hashem, his memory is eternally kept before Hashem.

And so one must take upon himself on Rosh Hashanah to remember Hashem always.

The lesson of Zichronos is a personal resolve: to keep Hashem in mind at every moment.

For each person, according to how he remembers the Creator, so is he remembered for good Above.

Again middah k'neged middah: the degree to which a person keeps Hashem in his thoughts is the degree to which he is favorably remembered in Shomayim.

And Shofaros is the aspect of Yaakov, whose image is engraved beneath the Kisei HaKavod.

Shofaros corresponds to Yaakov, whose form is etched beneath the Throne of Glory — reflecting his unique spiritual root.

For he possesses the beauty (shufrei) of Adam HaRishon, the handiwork of the Holy One.

Yaakov inherited the radiant "beauty" of Adam HaRishon, whom Hashem fashioned with His own hands — and the word "Shofaros" itself echoes this "shufra" (beauty).

And this is merited through the Torah.

One attains this lofty aspect of Yaakov specifically through Torah, which was Yaakov's defining avodah.

And to this the shofar hints — to awaken the power of the Torah and the "voice of Yaakov."

The shofar's cry is meant to arouse within us the koach of Torah, the "kol Yaakov," which is the path by which we grasp Yaakov's exalted aspect.

Summary: Rosh Hashanah renews the "straight path" in which man was originally created, and the shofar is sounded to seize that renewal and become firmly anchored in it. The three berachos of Malchiyos, Zichronos, and Shofaros connect us to the Avos — Avraham, who proclaimed Hashem's kingship; Yitzchak, whose constant remembrance of Hashem earns eternal remembrance for him; and Yaakov, whose engraved image and inherited beauty of Adam HaRishon are attained through Torah, which the shofar awakens as the "kol Yaakov."
