Concerning the matter of Shabbos Teshuvah.

The Sefas Emes addresses Shabbos Shuvah, the Shabbos of return between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

For the essence of teshuvah is through da'as (knowledge/awareness), as it is written, "And you shall know this day and take it to your heart (vahasheivosa)..." (Devarim 4:39).

True teshuvah flows from da'as — clear inner awareness — as the verse links "knowing" with "returning it to your heart."

The explanation: through a person clarifying within himself that "Hashem is the Elokim," and that no life-force or power exists except from Hashem Yisbarach, then shame automatically falls upon the person, and "he returns and is healed."

When one truly internalizes that all vitality and strength come solely from Hashem, a natural shame arises over having strayed, and that very shame brings him to return and be healed.

As it is written, "Return, O Yisrael, unto Hashem your Elokim" (Hoshea 14:2).

The haftarah's call to "return all the way unto Hashem your Elokim" is precisely this recognition that Hashem alone is the source.

To clarify that your strength is from Hashem.

The teshuvah of "unto Hashem your Elokim" means realizing that one's own power derives entirely from Him.

And this is what Chazal wrote: "Great is teshuvah, for it reaches up to the Kisei HaKavod (Throne of Glory)" (Yoma 86a).

The Sefas Emes will now explain why teshuvah is said to reach all the way to the Throne of Glory.

It may be explained that Hashem's glory fills the entire earth, only that through sin, as it is written, "your iniquities separate" (Yeshayahu 59:2).

Hashem's glory truly fills all of creation; sin does not remove it but only erects a barrier — "your sins separate between you and your God."

And through teshuvah the glory of His kingship is revealed in every place.

Teshuvah removes the barrier of sin, so that the kavod of Hashem's malchus, already present everywhere, becomes revealed.

Therefore on Shabbos Kodesh, which is called "sahadusa" (testimony), and the glory of His kingship becomes clarified to Bnei Yisrael, and the da'as comes to them — as it is written regarding Shabbos, "to know that I am Hashem" (Shemos 31:13) — therefore Shabbos assists with teshuvah.

Shabbos is "testimony" to Hashem as Creator; on it the glory of His kingship is made clear to Bnei Yisrael and they attain da'as, "to know that I am Hashem." Since teshuvah depends on exactly that da'as, Shabbos is a powerful aid to teshuvah.

Summary: The essence of teshuvah is da'as — the clear inner recognition that "Hashem is the Elokim" and that no life or power exists except from Him. This awareness naturally produces a healing shame that brings a person to return "unto Hashem your Elokim." Teshuvah is said to reach the Throne of Glory because Hashem's glory already fills all creation; sin only erects a separating barrier, and teshuvah removes it so that the glory of His kingship is revealed everywhere. Because Shabbos is "testimony" through which Bnei Yisrael attain the da'as "to know that I am Hashem," Shabbos itself assists and empowers the work of teshuvah.
