Daily renewal and the toil of self-reckoning

In the aforementioned Midrash: "Every day I would calculate to which place I am going, etc." (Tehillim 119:59, "I considered my ways").

Dovid HaMelech describes a daily accounting — constantly reckoning where his path in avodas Hashem was leading him.

For each day new halachos are renewed Above, as Chazal expounded on the verse "and an utterance went forth from His mouth" (Iyov 37:2).

Each day brings a fresh outpouring of Torah and divine direction from Heaven.

And this is the meaning of "He renews in His goodness each day, constantly, the work of Creation" (mechadesh b'tuvo b'chol yom tamid ma'aseh bereishis).

Creation is not a one-time event; Hashem renews the world — and its spiritual pathways — every single day.

And the person who calculates his ways each day merits to find the good pathways that are renewed in the world each day.

One who lives with daily self-reckoning becomes attuned to the fresh avenues of holiness Hashem opens each day.

Therefore a person must each day strengthen himself and accept upon himself ol malchus Shomayim (the yoke of Heaven), as it is written "which I command you today" — literally today.

The Torah's word "today" is meant literally: every day demands a renewed acceptance of Hashem's sovereignty.

And therefore, this corresponding to that, there is a strengthening of the yetzer hara also each day; and one who sets his ways merits the salvation of Hashem to find the true path.

Because holiness renews daily, the yetzer hara renews its assault daily too — but one who carefully orders his path merits Hashem's help to find the way of truth.

And Chazal expounded that he merits to behold in Olam HaBa the salvation of the Holy One, Blessed be He.

The reward for this daily striving is to witness Hashem's full yeshuah in the World to Come.

And this means that even one who does not attain complete understanding merits, through the daily toil and searching, to complete that attainment in Olam HaBa.

The effort itself is precious: even unfinished grasp, if pursued sincerely each day, will be brought to completion in the next world.

And nevertheless, even the simple person's effort is true, in the manner of "one who comes to purify himself is assisted" (Yoma 38b).

Sincere striving, even at a simple level, is genuine avodah and draws down Heavenly assistance.

This is what Dovid HaMelech, peace be upon him, said: "I considered my ways" each day, therefore in the end "and I returned my feet to Your testimonies" (Tehillim 119:59).

The daily cheshbon hanefesh is what ultimately brought Dovid's whole self — even his "feet," his physical life — back toward Hashem.

For through all the acceptances of malchus Shomayim that one accepts each day, constantly, one merits in the end to rectify everything.

The accumulated daily acceptances of Hashem's kingship eventually effect a complete tikkun of the whole person.

"My feet" refers to the physical/material dimension, that it too should be elevated through the deveikus (cleaving) of da'as.

The "feet" symbolize the bodily, material self, which is meant to be raised and bound to Hashem through the clarity of da'as.

As explained above, the meaning of "and I will give your rains in their time" (Vayikra 26:4).

The Sefas Emes reads "gishmeichem" (your rains) as alluding to your "gashmiyus" (materiality) — that the physical itself becomes a vessel for blessing in its proper time.

And so it is written: "In all your ways know Him, and He will straighten your paths" (Mishlei 3:6).

When one brings da'as of Hashem into every activity, even the mundane, Hashem straightens his way.

And all of this comes about through "you shall toil in Torah" (Vayikra 26:3), which is the aspect of da'as.

The toil of Torah is the source of da'as — the binding clarity that elevates the entire person, body and soul.

Summary: Because Hashem renews Creation and its spiritual pathways every day, a person must engage in daily self-reckoning and a fresh acceptance of ol malchus Shomayim. The yetzer hara renews itself daily as well, but sincere daily toil — even when understanding is incomplete — draws Heavenly assistance, ultimately elevates even one's physical self ("feet") through the deveikus of da'as born of toiling in Torah, and is completed in Olam HaBa.
