Inner intent and outer deed in mitzvos

ובמד' ישלח עזרך כו' מקידוש מעשים מציון מעשים כו'.

And in the Midrash on "May He send your help..." (Tehillim 20:3) — [it expounds] "from the sanctity of deeds, from the marker of deeds..."

The Midrash reads the pasuk's "from the Sanctuary" (mi'kodesh) and "from Tziyon" as alluding to "kiddush maasim" (the sanctification of deeds) and "tziyun maasim" (the marking of deeds) — two dimensions the Sefas Emes will now explain.

פי' דיש בכל מצוה ומעש"ט ב' בחי'.

The explanation: in every mitzvah and good deed there are two aspects.

Every mitzvah contains two dimensions, which the Sefas Emes now identifies.

עובדא ומחשבה כידוע.

The act and the thought, as is known.

One aspect is the physical deed (maaseh); the other is the inner intention and thought (machshavah) behind it.

וגוף המעשה הוא רק ציון ורמז לכוונת המצוה.

And the body of the act is only a "marker" and a hint to the inner intention of the mitzvah.

The outer physical action is merely a tziyun (sign-post) pointing toward the real essence of the mitzvah, which is its inner kavanah (intention).

ומ"מ הכוונה והקדושה משייר ברכה והארה לגוף המעשה.

Nevertheless, the intention and the holiness leave over a blessing and an illumination upon the body of the act.

Even though the act is only a pointer, the inner kavanah and kedushah leave a residue of blessing and light within the physical deed itself.

וסיוע של גוף המצוה מורגש יותר בנפש האדם מהארת הקדושה בעצמה שהיא רוחניי ביותר.

And the support of the body of the mitzvah is felt more strongly in a person's soul than the illumination of the holiness itself, which is exceedingly spiritual.

Because the holiness in its pure form is so lofty and spiritual, a person actually feels the help of the tangible, physical mitzvah more readily than he feels the abstract kedushah behind it.

וז"ש ישלח עזרך מקידוש מעשים.

And this is the meaning of "May He send your help" — from the sanctification of deeds.

The "help" Hashem sends comes from "kiddush maasim," the holiness that infuses one's deeds.

ומציון מעשים יסעדך.

"And from the marker of deeds He will support you."

The "support" comes from "tziyun maasim" — the tangible physical deed, which a person can actually feel sustaining him.

והוא כמו בחי' ימי המעשה שנק' ציון מעשים.

And this is like the aspect of the weekdays (yemei ha'maaseh), which are called "the marker of deeds."

The six workdays correspond to "tziyun maasim" — the realm of active, physical doing.

וש"ק קידוש מעשים כי קדושה היא פרישה.

And Shabbos Kodesh is "the sanctification of deeds," for kedushah means separation (perishah).

Shabbos is "kiddush maasim," because holiness is essentially a stepping-back and withdrawal — and Shabbos is when we withdraw from work.

וביטול כל המלאכות בשבת נקרא קידוש מעשים.

And the cessation of all labors on Shabbos is called "the sanctification of deeds."

By refraining from all melachah (creative labor) on Shabbos, we sanctify our deeds — this resting is itself the "kiddush maasim."

והנשמה יתירה בשבת משייר ברכה גם לנפש האדם על ימי המעשה כמ"ש מיני' מתברכין ו' יומין כו':

And the neshamah yeseirah (extra soul) of Shabbos leaves over a blessing even to the soul of a person for the weekdays, as it says, "from it [Shabbos] all six days are blessed" (Zohar).

Just as the inner kavanah leaves blessing upon the physical deed, the elevated neshamah yeseirah of Shabbos deposits blessing that carries into and sustains all the workdays that follow.

Summary: Every mitzvah has two aspects — the inner intention (the true essence) and the outer act, which is only a "marker" pointing to it. Yet the holiness leaves a residue of blessing in the physical deed, and people actually feel that tangible help more than the lofty spiritual light. So too with time: the weekdays are "tziyun maasim," the realm of doing, while Shabbos — a withdrawal that is itself holiness — is "kiddush maasim," and its neshamah yeseirah leaves a blessing that flows into and sustains all six days.
