Every Jew's unique supernal help revealed through Shabbos
Shabbos · neshamah yeseirah · soul root · Divine help · supernatural governance
In the Midrash: "May He send your help from the Sanctuary" (Tehillim 20:3).
The Sefas Emes opens with the Midrash on this verse, which blesses a person that his help should come "from the holy place."
The verse should have said "His help."
He raises a grammatical difficulty: we might have expected the verse to speak of Hashem's help in general terms, rather than "your help" in the personal possessive.
But "your help" implies that every person has a help that is uniquely his own.
The wording teaches that each individual has a particular spiritual support designated specifically for him — a personal channel of Divine assistance.
The matter is the power of the neshamah (soul) that every person possesses in his supernal root.
This personal "help" is the strength of one's own neshamah, which is rooted on high in a source unique to that person.
And indeed Chazal said: there is no blade of grass that does not have a mazal (constellation) in the heavens that strikes it and says, "Grow!"
He brings a proof from the principle that even the lowliest plant has a heavenly force assigned to it that drives its growth.
All the more so a person, who is above all created beings, certainly has a supernal power.
If a mere blade of grass has its own heavenly source, then a human being — the crown of creation — surely has his own supernal force sustaining and elevating him.
And this is the illumination of the neshamah yeseirah (additional soul) that comes on Shabbos Kodesh to every Jew.
This supernal power is most accessible through the extra soul granted to every Jew on Shabbos, which draws down a light from one's supernal root.
This is what the Midrash says on the verse "And You are exalted forever" (Tehillim 92:9) — You are always exalted, etc., in Your world.
This verse is from the Shabbos psalm (Mizmor Shir l'Yom HaShabbos), and the Midrash reads it as expressing the exalted dimension of Hashem's governance that is revealed specifically through Shabbos.
The explanation: although the creation during the six days proceeded according to nature,
The six days of creation established the natural order — the ordinary, fixed workings of the world.
but Shabbos Kodesh is a new power that encompasses all of creation, and it is the root of creation, above nature.
Shabbos is not merely the seventh day within nature; it is the inner root and source of the entire creation, a dimension that stands above the natural order.
And this mode of governance was handed over to Bnei Yisrael.
This supernatural, root-level conduct of the world — the realm of Shabbos — was entrusted to the Jewish people as their portion.
This is what is said about Shabbos: "It is a sign... that you may know that I am Hashem who sanctifies you" (Shemos 31:13).
Shabbos is called an "os" (sign) precisely because it testifies that Bnei Yisrael are bound to the higher governance through which Hashem sanctifies them.
The explanation: Shabbos is testimony that Bnei Yisrael have a portion in the governance from above.
The "sign" of Shabbos bears witness that the Jewish people share in the supernatural, root-level conduct of the world — the very source from which each Jew's personal "help from the Sanctuary" flows.
Summary: "May He send your help" teaches that every Jew has a unique supernal power — the strength of his neshamah rooted on high — which shines most fully through the neshamah yeseirah of Shabbos; for Shabbos is the root of creation above nature, and it is the sign that Bnei Yisrael share in the Divine governance from above.
