Power of the Festivals
Holiness · Jewish Holidays · Divine Protection · Spiritual Awakening
“You shall not make molten gods for yourself; you shall observe the Festival of Matzot.”
This teaches that guarding the festivals is connected to guarding the purity of faith and avoiding any form of idolatrous distortion.
Our sages taught that one who degrades the festivals is as if he worships idols.
The festivals reveal divine holiness; denying their significance is akin to denying God Himself.
A person must believe in the power of holiness that God placed within us, so that he does not, God forbid, create a separating barrier that distances him from truth.
The holiness within a Jew can be obscured only by self‑created barriers; faith in the divine gift prevents this.
The festivals are a testimony for Israel, as it is written: “He sanctifies Israel and the seasons.”
The sanctity of time flows through Israel; the festivals attest to Israel’s unique spiritual role.
Just as there is a radiance in these days, so too a radiance is awakened in the hearts of the children of Israel.
The spiritual light of the festival awakens an inner light embedded in every Jew.
Thus it is written: “And Moses spoke… the festivals of the Lord to the children of Israel.”
Moses drew down the awareness awakened on festivals into the hearts of Israel.
Meaning: he extended the consciousness aroused on the sacred days to Israel.
The festivals are channels through which higher awareness descends.
And food preparation is permitted on Yom Tov.
This shows that actions serving the Jewish soul possess heightened holiness.
This teaches that work done for the sake of the Jewish soul contains added sanctity.
The sanctity of Israel elevates even physical acts done for their well‑being.
As it is written: “How lovely are your steps in sandals,” referring to the command to ascend on the three festivals, as it says: “All your males shall appear.”
The ascent to Jerusalem is praised as an expression of Israel’s spiritual beauty.
It is surely not understandable by human intellect how ordinary Israelites were fit to appear before God.
Rationally, such readiness seems impossible; yet it occurred.
Thus it appears that although this occurred without gradual preparation, since the inner essence of Israel belongs to God, they were granted permission three times a year to ascend even without proper preparation.
The festival pilgrimage draws on the innate divine point within every Jew.
Therefore it is said: “Your thighs are shaped…,” amen.
This alludes to hidden inner strength granted by God.
Meaning: this was only through the power of the point given as a gift by God to every Jew.
The divine spark alone enabled such elevation.
As my grandfather said: regarding this it is written, “I am your shield.”
God Himself protects the inner point.
And therefore we bless: “Shield of Abraham.”
Acknowledging that God guards the covenantal essence.
And this is the meaning of “daughter of the noble one.”
Israel inherits nobility from its divine-rooted ancestors.
Therefore Scripture promises: “No man shall covet your land when you ascend…”
The divine protection extends even to physical possessions during the pilgrimage.
For in general a person must not ascend beyond his preparation, but must recognize his place.
Spiritual ascent usually requires proportional readiness.
If not, he requires protection, and there is danger.
Unprepared ascent can cause spiritual harm.
But regarding the festival pilgrimages, God promised: “No one will covet…”
Divine assurance removes the danger normally present in unprepared ascent.
Therefore a person must believe in the power of the festivals given to Israel, as stated above.
Faith in the festivals’ divine empowerment allows the inner light to awaken.
From the teachings on the Seventh Day of Passover.
This concludes the Sefat Emet’s reflection for this festival.
The Sefat Emet teaches that the festivals awaken an inner divine point within every Jew, granting spiritual elevation even beyond normal preparation. Their holiness protects and empowers, revealing Israel’s innate connection to God.
