Power of Voice Over Forces

Pesach · תרל"ה (1874) · Essay 11

Jacob’s Voice · Esau’s Hands · Red Sea · Speech · Holiness

In the Midrash on Beshalach: “Why do you cry out to Me?”

The Midrash asks why God rebukes Moses for crying out at the Sea.

This is the meaning of: “They cried out, and the Lord heard”—what is this?

The Sefat Emet connects this verse to the nature of prayer and deliverance.

So too, He bequeathed two inheritances.

Israel and Esau receive distinct spiritual “inheritances” or capacities.

To Jacob belongs the voice, and to Esau the hands.

Jacob’s power is spiritual speech; Esau’s is physical force.

This one exalts himself through his inheritance, etc.

Each side seeks mastery through its respective gift.

For earlier it says: “The face of the Lord is against evildoers, to cut off their memory from the earth.”

The verse seems to speak of divine hostility toward the wicked.

And the connection of the verses is difficult, as the commentators struggled.

The Sefat Emet notes interpretive tension in the textual sequence.

However, it can be explained that the power granted to the wicked to do evil is in order to cut off their memory from the earth.

Their temporary strength leads ultimately to their downfall.

So that when the righteous cry out, it brings about the wicked’s defeat.

The cry of the righteous activates the collapse of evil.

As happened with Pharaoh, who was given strength, as it says: “He makes nations great…”

Pharaoh’s empowerment was part of God’s plan to later overthrow him.

And so it is with these two inheritances: Israel, through the power of the voice, can prevail and also attain mastery over Esau’s hands.

Speech allows Israel to access even the domain associated with Esau.

As our sages said: When the voice is the voice of Jacob, the hands are not the hands of Esau.

Proper use of spiritual speech neutralizes physical aggression.

And this is the meaning of “exalts himself,” that he merits inheriting even the second portion.

Jacob can rise to claim even Esau’s sphere.

And likewise Esau, through his hands, nullifies Israel from words of Torah.

Physical domination can obstruct spiritual pursuits.

As it says: “Do not pass through me, lest I come out with the sword…”

Esau threatens Israel’s spiritual path with violence.

The matter of the splitting of the sea after the Exodus is that first they left the authority of Pharaoh.

Initial liberation was merely freedom from domination.

And afterward God desired that Israel overpower Pharaoh and rule over him.

True redemption includes transformation of former oppressors.

This occurred at the Sea, where the Egyptians were given into Israel’s hands and destroyed for their sake.

The oppressor was not only escaped but overturned.

And through the cry born of severe bondage, they rose to dominate their enemies.

Their suffering‑generated prayer elevated them above their foes.

And it is written: “And a double-edged sword in their hand.”

This sword symbolizes the union of inner and outer strength.

We explained that through their power in speech, they merit also the hands.

Spiritual expression grants physical capability.

And “double-edged” refers to the powers of the tongue and the organ of covenant.

Two forms of sanctity: speech and sexual purity.

The Exodus is the aspect of speech; hence the command to recount the Exodus—“the mouth speaks.”

Redemption is expressed particularly through voice and narrative.

And the splitting of the sea is the aspect of the covenant, as the sages hinted in: “The sea saw and fled.”

The sea “fled” from the holiness of the covenant.

And also in the verse: “And he took the bones of Joseph with him.”

Joseph represents covenantal purity; his presence enabled the miracle.

And through guarding the mouth and the holy covenant, one merits the sword.

Spiritual discipline leads to victorious strength.

And through this one overpowers the forces of Esau and Amalek, as it says: “By the sword.”

Purity breaks the power of destructive nations.

And this is what it says: “And they went up armed.”

Their weaponry symbolizes spiritual empowerment.

They merited the sword through the power of inner might, overcoming their inclination.

The true battle is internal, preceding external victory.

As Scripture says: “All holding swords… every man his sword upon his thigh…”

The sword represents moral and covenantal strength.

And it may be hinted that “Pi HaChirot”—the place name—means the mouth of freedom, for freedom depends on the mouth, as above.

Redeeming speech is the key to all liberation.

The Sefat Emet teaches that Israel’s true power is the sanctified voice, which can even transform the realm of physical force symbolized by Esau. Through cry, speech, and covenantal purity, Israel rose from mere escape to mastery at the Sea, overturning Pharaoh and revealing that liberation depends on the holiness of mouth and covenant.
