Hidden Divine Light in Festivals

מו"ז ז"ל הגיד דברי הזוהר אמור שנקראו החגים יום טוב ע"י שמאיר בהם מאור הגנוז.

My revered grandfather, of blessed memory, taught the words of the Zohar on Emor: that the festivals are called “Yom Tov” because the hidden primordial light shines within them.

The Sefat Emet reports his grandfather’s teaching that the sanctity of the festivals comes from a flash of the original hidden light of creation.

ע"ש בפסוק אור זרוע לצדיק.

As it is taught regarding the verse: “Light is sown for the righteous.”

This light is understood to be planted within the holy days, available to those who can receive it.

לכן מבקשין שבענו מטובך שנוכל לקחת הארת היו"ט על כל ימי השנה.

Therefore we pray, “Satisfy us with Your goodness,” so that we may draw the illumination of the festival for all the days of the year.

The prayer asks that the flash of Yom Tov light endure and nourish us continuously.

כי האור נגנז וכ' בו ויבדל כו'.

For the light was hidden, and regarding it Scripture says: “And He separated…”

The hiddenness of the primordial light is linked to the divine act of separation in creation.

וגם בשבתות ויו"ט יש בהם הבדלה א"כ הוא ענין אחד.

And on Sabbaths and festivals there is also separation; thus it is one matter.

The same principle of sacred differentiation underlies both creation’s light and the holiness of sacred times.

והשי"ת בטובו מסר לבנ"י הזמנים שמתנוצץ בהם מאותו האור כי טוב.

And in His goodness, the Holy One entrusted Israel with the appointed times in which that good light flickers forth.

Israel is given access to specially charged moments when the hidden light resurfaces.

לכן שלש פעמים בשנה יראה כל זכורך יִרְאה יִרָאה כו'.

Therefore, three times a year all your males shall appear—shall see and be seen.

The dual reading “shall see / shall be seen” reflects mutual revelation between Israel and God.

וכ' ולא יראו פני ריקם.

And it is written: “And they shall not appear before Me empty-handed.”

Coming before God requires bringing something—an inward readiness to receive the divine light.

וכמו כן צריכין לקבל אותה ההארה קבוע בלב.

So too we must receive that illumination as something fixed in the heart.

The flash of sacred time must be internalized into enduring spiritual awareness.

כשם שבא לראות כך בא להיראות.

Just as one comes to see, so one comes to be seen.

Encounter with the divine is reciprocal; openness allows both giving and receiving.

וכתיב בפסוק אחד איש כמתנת ידו כברכת ה' כו' אשר נתן כו'.

And it is written in another verse: “Each person according to the gift of his hand, according to the blessing… that the Lord has given.”

What a person gives is measured by what he has been given; the act of giving and receiving are inseparable.

כי הנתינה והקבלה אחד.

For giving and receiving are one.

The Sefat Emet teaches that spiritual flow is cyclical: what one bestows and what one absorbs are aspects of the same movement.

ובמ"א הארכנו לכן קצרתי.

He alludes to a more extended treatment but keeps this teaching concise.

Summary: The festivals shine with the hidden primordial light. Israel’s task is to draw that light into the year, internalize it, and engage in reciprocal seeing, giving, and receiving with the Divine.
