“And the people feared Hashem… then they sang.”

The Sefat Emet notes that the people’s fear of God is what enabled the burst of song that followed.

One may explain, as I heard from my grandfather z”l regarding the verse “And they were very afraid, and they cried out… to Hashem,” that this fear was considered to them almost like idolatry—to fear a created being, Heaven forbid.

The Sefat Emet cites his grandfather: fearing anything other than God is a subtle form of misplaced worship.

So too here: now that they came to true fear of Hashem, for that very reason they sang.

Once their fear transformed into authentic awe of God alone, song naturally emerged.

Indeed, this is a good sign after the salvation—that Hashem rescued them, and they became clothed in fear of Hashem, and did not, Heaven forbid, fall into arrogance.

True awe after redemption signals humility, not pride.

On the contrary, they were clothed in fear of Hashem; this is the true sign of a servant of God.

Authentic reverence shows the integrity of one’s spiritual service.

And about this it is said: “My joy comes from my awe, and my awe from my joy,” and song is fitting when awe and joy join together.

The fusion of awe and joy naturally expresses itself as sacred song.

This occurs only with heavenly help, as the Midrash teaches: not everyone who wishes to sing is able to sing.

Song is a divine gift, not an automatic human capacity.

And thus it is said: “He fulfills the desire of those who fear Him,” for one who truly fears Hashem cannot, to human eyes, be filled with joy and desire.

From an earthly viewpoint, awe seems incompatible with joy, yet God grants this union.

But Hashem grants him desire and joy, as it is written: “Those who fear Him lack nothing.”

God Himself provides joy to those who fear Him, completing their inner wholeness.

Summary: The Sefat Emet explains that Israel’s song arose from a purified awe of God, not from fear of external forces. When awe and joy merge—enabled by divine help—true song emerges, and God ensures that those who fear Him lack nothing.
