Redemption Through Teshuvah

“In the verse ‘And Israel saw… the great hand…’.”
The Sefat Emet begins by referencing the verse describing Israel’s perception of God’s great power at the Sea.
“And so our Sages taught: in Egypt there were ten plagues, and at the Sea fifty.”
This connects the intensified revelation at the Sea to a higher spiritual awakening.
“It is stated in the Midrash on the verse ‘Trust of all the ends of the earth and distant seas’ that the gates of prayer, like a mikveh, are sometimes closed.”
The Midrash compares prayer to a mikveh that may not always be accessible.
“But the gates of repentance are always open, like the sea.”
Repentance is depicted as permanently open, paralleling the sea’s openness.
“And so our Sages expounded on ‘And Pharaoh drew near’—that he drew Israel’s hearts near to repentance.”
Pharaoh’s pursuit awakened Israel spiritually, pushing them toward repentance.
“It seems that the salvation at the Sea was in the aspect of penitents.”
The miracle of the Sea is framed as a redemption rooted in the energy of repentance.
“And they have said: in the place where penitents stand, the completely righteous cannot stand.”
This famous teaching highlights the elevated spiritual level of those who return.
“Therefore it is written about it: ‘bringing near,’ as I explained elsewhere on the verse ‘You choose and bring near.’”
Redemption contains two dynamics: being chosen and being drawn near.
“For in all of Israel there must always be repair through these two aspects: choosing and being brought near.”
Both proactive choice and divine drawing-near form the complete spiritual process.
“The Exodus was the choosing, and the Sea-splitting was the drawing-near.”
The two stages of redemption correspond to these two spiritual forces.
“And since this salvation was a preparation for future generations, it needed to include the aspect of repentance as well.”
The Sea event forged a template for all future redemptions, requiring the presence of repentance.
“And just as we find that the measure for Egypt was ‘He magnifies nations and destroys them,’ as Rashi explains—therefore He left them Baal Tzafon.”
Egypt was given an opportunity to stumble further through the remaining idol, intensifying their downfall.
“So too with the righteous: the Holy One deals with them for good and does not allow them to err or fall into arrogance.”
God guides the righteous away from spiritual pitfalls that could damage them.
“As in the matter of ‘Seven times the righteous falls and rises.’”
The righteous may stumble, but divinely guided stumbling becomes a path to rising.
“Therefore it is written: ‘And they returned…’.”
This return was orchestrated to enable a spiritual correction.
“So that the repair would be shown afterward for all generations.”
The events at the Sea became an eternal model of repentance, return, and divine closeness.
The Sefat Emet teaches that the Sea-splitting embodied the spiritual force of repentance, complementing the choosing of Israel at the Exodus, establishing a perpetual pattern of divine drawing-near for all generations.
