Four Expressions of Redemption
Four Cups · Seder · Senses · Tefillin · Divine Connection
“Regarding the four cups that the Sages instituted corresponding to the four expressions of redemption.”
The Sefat Emet opens by linking the four cups of the Seder to the four divine promises of redemption in Exodus.
“And we also find four expressions: seeing, hearing, remembering, knowing.”
These four sensory-verbal expressions parallel the four redemptive expressions, suggesting a human-spiritual correspondence.
“And God heard…”
The Torah describes God as ‘hearing,’ symbolizing divine attention to Israel’s suffering.
“And God saw, and God knew, and God remembered…”
These verbs highlight additional modes of divine connection: seeing, knowing, remembering.
“As we find in a person four senses located in the head.”
The Sefat Emet draws a parallel: humans possess four primary senses situated above, mirroring the divine modes.
“The senses of hearing, sight, taste, and smell.”
These four senses correspond to the four divine expressions mentioned earlier.
“And it is written in the holy books that the four passages in the head-tefillin bind these four senses.”
The four compartments of the head-tefillin spiritually elevate and align the senses with holiness.
“And the hand-tefillin correspond to binding the sense of touch.”
The single compartment of the arm-tefillin aligns the tangible, physical sense of touch with divine service.
“And, so to speak, God attached the souls of Israel to Himself through all the senses, for remembrance corresponds to smell and knowledge to taste.”
The Sefat Emet explains that each sense links Israel to God: smell evokes memory, while taste evokes inner knowing.
“And the mitzvah of reclining hints at the arm-tefillin, which are on the left side.”
Reclining at the Seder represents surrender and intimacy, paralleling the arm-tefillin’s placement on the left.
“As in the verse, ‘And God turned (led) them.’”
This turning suggests a gentle divine guidance, akin to the symbolism of reclining.
“As it is written: ‘His left hand is under my head, and His right hand embraces me.’”
The left and right hands symbolize divine support and embrace, mirroring tefillin and the posture of reclining.
Summary: The four cups of Passover parallel divine modes of redemption, human senses, and the structure of tefillin. Through these correspondences, the Sefat Emet teaches that every sense becomes a point of connection between Israel and God, culminating in the symbolism of reclining as an expression of divine embrace.
