בענין קי"ס אחר יצ"מ.
On the matter of the splitting of the sea after the exodus from Egypt.
The Sefat Emet introduces the theme: understanding why the splitting of the sea follows the exodus.
דכ' ויוציאם בכסף וזהב.
As it is written: “And He brought them out with silver and gold.”
This verse hints at layers of spiritual wealth gained through redemption.
כי אחר יצ"מ זכו בנ"י לאהבת ה' כדכ' זכרתי לך כו' אהבת כלולותיך לכתך אחרי במדבר.
For after the exodus Israel merited the love of God, as it is written: “I remember for you… the love of your bridal days, your following Me in the wilderness.”
Leaving Egypt awakened a profound relationship of love between Israel and God.
ואחר קי"ס זכו ליראת ה' כמ"ש וייראו העם את ה'.
And after the splitting of the sea they merited the awe of God, as it is said: “And the people were in awe of the Lord.”
The miracle of the sea instilled yirah, a deeper spiritual clarity rooted in awe.
ואיתא במד' תורי זהב זו ביזת הים.
And the Midrash states: “Towers of gold” refers to the spoils of the sea.
The gold symbolizes the spiritual gain associated with awe.
נקודות הכסף ביזת מצרים.
“Points of silver” refers to the spoils of Egypt.
Silver represents the spark-like passion of love awakened at the exodus.
כי ביציאת מצרים נתברר כל הפסולת מאהבות ורצונות שנתפשטו בתערובות טו"ר.
For at the exodus all the impurities in loves and desires, which had spread in the mixture of good and evil, were purified.
The exodus cleansed distorted desires, separating love from the admixture of impurity.
כמ"ש מו"ז ז"ל פי' מאשפות ירים אביון.
As my grandfather, of blessed memory, explained on the verse “He raises the needy from the refuse.”
This teaches that redemption elevates the soul from its degraded attachments.
וכמו כן הוצרך להתברר יראות רעות מתערובות טו"ר וזה נעשה בקי"ס.
And likewise the bad fears mixed within good and evil needed purification, and this occurred at the splitting of the sea.
The sea-event refined fear, separating holy awe from base anxiety.
והישועה בקי"ס היתה לדורות כדכ' יראת ה' טהורה עומדת לעד.
And the salvation at the sea was for all generations, as it is written: “The awe of the Lord is pure, enduring forever.”
Awe gained at the sea imprints itself eternally on the soul of Israel.
לכן נרמז בתורי זהב שהוא מסודר ומתישב בקביעות יותר.
Therefore it is hinted in “towers of gold,” which are more ordered and permanently established.
Gold symbolizes stability—the enduring nature of awe.
ואהבה נק' נקודות הכסף כי התלהבות האהבה אינה בקביעות כמו היראה.
And love is called “points of silver,” for the fiery enthusiasm of love is not as constant as awe.
Love rises and falls, like glimmering points, unlike the steadiness of awe.
וב' אלו אהבה ויראה כוללים כל המדות.
And these two—love and awe—include all the qualities.
All spiritual traits root themselves in this dual foundation.
לכן מסיים הפ' ואין בשבטיו כושל.
Therefore the verse concludes: “And among His tribes there was none who stumbled.”
The tribes stood firm because all qualities were perfected through love and awe.
כי באמת כל שבט יש לו דרך אחר וכל הדרכים נתבררו ביצ"מ.
For truly each tribe has its own path, yet all the paths were clarified at the exodus.
Though diverse, all spiritual modes trace back to the root purification of Egypt.
אך שורש כולם הם כסף וזהב.
But the root of them all is silver and gold.
Love and awe are the universal foundations underlying all paths.
כידוע ששה שבטים על הר גריזים וששה על הר עיבל.
As is known, six tribes stood on Mount Gerizim and six on Mount Ebal.
This pairing reflects the twofold structure of spiritual qualities.
ולכן איתא כי קי"ס הי' עפ"י דין.
Therefore it is taught that the splitting of the sea occurred according to strict judgment.
The event had universal consequences, invoking the attribute of justice.
ומ"ש שהי' קטרוג הללו עע"ז כו'.
And regarding what is said—that there was an accusation, “these worship idols and those worship idols.”
The heavenly prosecution questioned Israel’s worthiness.
ויש לתמוה שהרי אמרו ז"ל מה תצעק כדאי הם והאמונה שהאמינו בי כו'.
And this is surprising, for our sages said: “Why cry out? They are worthy, for the faith they had in Me.”
The contradiction between accusation and praise demands explanation.
אך הפי' ע"י שהי' בקי"ס הכנה וישועה לכל הדורות כי יצ"מ הי' הצלה לפי הדור ההוא.
But the explanation is that the sea was a preparation and salvation for all generations, whereas the exodus was a rescue only for its own generation.
The sea's miracle had lasting implications, raising broader judgment.
אבל קי"ס הי' להיות הכנה על כל הדורות.
But the splitting of the sea was to be a preparation for all generations.
Its spiritual effects would unfold eternally.
לכן הי' הקטרוג שכל הדורות עתידין ג"כ לחטוא.
Therefore there was an accusation, for all future generations would also sin.
The judgment encompassed the failings of all Israel across time.
ואדרבא ע"י שאותו הדור היו מתחזקים באמונתם הכין הקב"ה להיות אז הישועה לכל הדורות.
On the contrary, through that generation strengthening their faith, God prepared the salvation then for all generations.
Their faith created the spiritual vessel for eternal deliverance.
ובזה מובן מ"ש והנה מצרים נוסע כו' וייראו מאוד.
And with this we understand what is written: “And behold, Egypt was traveling… and they were very afraid.”
Their fear reflected awareness of the moment’s universal significance.
והלא ידעו כי ירדפו אחריהם כאשר אמר הקב"ה ואכבדה בפרעה.
But did they not already know Egypt would pursue them, as God had said: “I will be glorified through Pharaoh”?
Thus their fear cannot be explained as mere surprise.
אכן לפי אשר הרגישו בנפשותם כי אין להם עוד שיעבוד במצרים ובמה יכולין לרדוף אחריהם.
Rather, since they felt within themselves that they no longer had any subjugation to Egypt, how could Egypt pursue them?
They sensed they had transcended Egyptian power entirely.
אכן מרע"ה ניחם אותם במה שהודיע להם כי כל הרדיפה הוא להיות ישועה זו הכנה לדורות.
But Moses comforted them by telling them that the pursuit was in order for this salvation to be a preparation for all generations.
The chase was part of forming the eternal redemption.
וכן הרמז מצרים נוסע אחריהם.
Thus the hint in the phrase “Egypt was traveling after them.”
The wording suggests a deeper, symbolic meaning.
אחריהם דייקא.
“After them”—precisely.
The phrasing alludes to later generations.
בדורות הבאים אחריהם.
Meaning the generations that would come after them.
The miracle was crafted for all future descendants of Israel.
The Sefat Emet explains that the exodus refined love, while the sea refined awe—two foundations of all spiritual traits. The sea’s miracle was universal and eternal, invoking strict judgment, because it prepared salvation for all generations.
