Divine Peace Through Conflict

Pesach · תרנ"ב (1891) · Essay 7

Peace · Torah · Spiritual Warfare · Passover · Shalom

“For six days you shall eat matzot, and on the seventh day there shall be an assembly for the Lord your God.”

The Sefat Emet opens by linking the verse to the spiritual structure of Passover: six days marked by struggle, and a seventh day marked by completion and unity.

It is stated in the Zohar on “The Lord is a man of war; the Lord is His name,” and Rabbi Elazar began: “Therefore it shall be said in the book of the wars of the Lord: ‘Et vahev basufah,’ etc.”

The teaching introduces a paradox: God's name is peace, yet He wages war—hinting at a deeper unity behind all conflict.

The idea is that the Holy One’s name is Peace, yet it is through His name that He fights.

Even divine conflict is an expression of peace, not a contradiction to it.

And so it is with all the wars of the Lord: love is their end.

Any true divine struggle concludes in restored harmony.

Thus after all the battles of the Exodus, in the end came the Song.

The song at the sea embodies the final revelation of unity after conflict.

And so with every dispute for the sake of Heaven—its end is to endure.

Holy disagreement leads not to destruction but to lasting truth.

The completion that comes at the end is proof that the struggle was for the sake of Heaven, a war of the Lord.

The enduring peace that emerges confirms the purity of the conflict.

Therefore, love is its conclusion.

Every divine struggle culminates in renewed affection.

And Israel, through the power of Torah, merited that perfection.

The Torah enables the achievement of harmonious resolution.

Therefore they are called “the Shulamit.”

Israel embodies the quality of peace and completion.

And all the battles of Israel are for the sake of peace.

Their struggles aim toward creating divine harmony.

As it is written: “I am peace, but when I speak, they are for war.”

Even when Israel must engage in conflict, their inner essence remains peace.

Meaning: even when I fight with them, I am peace.

The identity of peace is never lost, even in struggle.

And one merits this through the power of Torah, as it is written: “The Lord gives strength to His people... He blesses His people with peace.”

Torah grants the ability to transform conflict into peace.

For in the Torah it is written: “All her paths are peace.”

Peace permeates every genuine path of Torah.

What is meant by “all her paths”?

The Sefat Emet asks: how can every path lead to peace, even those involving struggle?

Meaning: even the battles carried out according to Torah are peace.

Conflict aligned with divine purpose is itself an aspect of peace.

And so it is with “For six days you shall eat matzot”: these represent the quarrels and battles with Egypt.

The six days symbolize struggle, purification, and spiritual contention.

And on the seventh day, an assembly, representing the gathering and completion that comes at the end through these battles.

The seventh day is the moment of harmony produced by the prior struggle.

And this is the Song on the Seventh Day of Passover.

The culmination of liberation is song—a revelation of unity.

Therefore the Midrash states that the Seventh Day of Passover is like Shabbat.

Both embody rest, peace, and spiritual wholeness.

And Shabbat is peace—the name of the Holy One.

Shabbat reveals God’s essence as peace, the final aim of all divine struggle.

This teaching explains that the six days of Passover symbolize struggle and purification, while the seventh day reveals the peace and completion that emerge from holy conflict. All true battles of the divine culminate in harmony, and Torah empowers Israel to transform strife into lasting peace.
