Sanctifying the First Harvest
Omer · Purity · First Fruits · Redemption · Spiritual Repair
“In the section of the Omer: ‘You shall harvest its harvest and bring… the first of your harvest…’”
The Sefat Emet opens by citing the Torah’s command to bring the first cutting of the harvest, highlighting its role as the beginning of spiritual elevation.
“And in the Midrash: ‘And you shall keep My covenant’—this refers to the commandment of the Omer.”
The Midrash associates keeping God’s covenant with the Omer-offering, showing that it represents a renewal of the bond between Israel and God.
“For that which remains attached does not receive impurity.”
The principle is that as long as something is connected to its source, it cannot become defiled; separation opens the possibility of impurity.
“Therefore, at the time of harvesting, one requires guarding not to become detached from the root, lest waste and impurity spread into it.”
The act of harvesting symbolizes a spiritual transition that demands vigilance, so the spiritual ‘root-connection’ is not lost.
“Therefore Israel must elevate the first of the harvest to the One on High.”
By offering the first of the produce, Israel reconnects the material world to its divine source, preventing spiritual estrangement.
“And the verse ‘And you shall keep My covenant’ hints at repairing the first sin, in which waste and a mixture of good and evil became intertwined.”
The Sefat Emet views the Omer as part of the cosmic rectification of the primordial mixing of good and evil from Eden.
“And it is taught regarding Passover and the grain that since it is the time of freedom and redemption, there is also freedom in the land.”
Not only Israel experiences liberation at Passover; even the natural world undergoes a release from constriction.
“And as it is said: the Omer permits (the new grain) in the land—meaning that what had been restricted in its inner essence through sin now becomes free.”
The Omer-offering unlocks an inner spiritual blockage, restoring freedom to the material world that had been limited by humanity’s earlier failings.
The Sefat Emet teaches that the Omer reconnects creation to its root, repairing the primordial mixture of good and evil and releasing both Israel and the natural world into a renewed state of freedom.
