Affliction as blocked light, healed by Shabbos

In the Midrash: "Judgments are prepared for scoffers" (Mishlei 19:29) — and they raise a difficulty: were not the laws of nega'im (plagues/afflictions) given to Yisrael?
The Midrash applies the verse about "judgments for scoffers" to the laws of tzara'as. But this seems puzzling: the parshah of nega'im was given to Bnei Yisrael, not to the wicked nations — so why speak of them as punishments fit for scoffers?
However, the Midrash explains that this is the sign that nega'im are not fitting for Bnei Yisrael.
The resolution: the very fact that an affliction is treated as such a serious matter shows that nega'im are essentially foreign to a Jew. They are not his natural state, but a sign that something has gone wrong.
Therefore, when a nega appeared on one of them, the verse obligated him to leave the camp of Yisrael.
Because affliction does not belong to the essence of a Jew, the metzora (afflicted person) must depart from the machaneh (camp) — the nega marks him as temporarily out of place among Bnei Yisrael.
And for scoffers, the judgments are prepared.
Punishment and affliction are the natural lot of the leitzim (scoffers, the wicked) — for them "judgments are prepared," whereas for Bnei Yisrael such things are an aberration.
Now the nega is a sealing-off of the light, as the Targum renders it "segiru" (a closing/enclosure) — that the penimiyus (inner dimension) cannot reveal itself and shine forth.
The Sefas Emes gives the inner meaning: a nega is a blockage of light. The Aramaic "segiru" (from "to close") shows that affliction is essentially a state in which a person's penimiyus — his inner holy light — is shut in and prevented from shining out.
And this is the nega in the skin of the flesh, which is the garment that came after the sin of Adam.
Significantly, the nega appears on the skin — the "garment" of flesh. This bodily covering is itself a consequence of Adam's chet (sin); before the sin, the body did not conceal the soul's light as it does now.
Therefore, at the receiving of the Torah, Bnei Yisrael were without nega'im, for even the garment was rectified, as it is written, "and they shall wash their garments" (Shemos 19:10), which alludes to the body, which is the garment of the soul.
At Matan Torah the people reached a tikkun even of the "garment" — the body itself. "Wash your garments" hints at the purification of the guf (body), the soul's outer mantle. With the covering itself rectified, the inner light could shine freely, and there were no nega'im.
And after the sin the nega'im returned; therefore the Midrash expounds "se'es, sapachas…" (the types of affliction, Vayikra 13:2) as referring to the four kingdoms.
After the sin of the Golden Calf the body again became a concealing garment, and nega'im returned. The Midrash links the categories of affliction to the arba malchuyos (four exiles) — galus itself is a kind of national nega, a blocking of Yisrael's inner light.
For all of this is because, since the wicked are present in the world, the light shines only in concealment.
The root of all "nega" — personal and national — is that as long as resha'im (the wicked) fill the world, the holy light cannot shine openly but only in hester (concealment). The blocked light is the spiritual condition of an unredeemed world.
And it is possible to say that this is why the closing-up (quarantine) of nega'im is for seven days — for there are no seven days without a Shabbos.
The metzora is shut away for seven days, and seven days must include a Shabbos. The Sefas Emes suggests this is no coincidence: Shabbos is the key to the affliction's resolution.
And it is written, "the six days of labor it shall be closed… on Shabbos it shall be opened" (cf. Yechezkel 46:1), for then the penimiyus shines.
The pasuk about the inner gate being closed on weekdays and opened on Shabbos captures the dynamic of the nega. Through the six workdays the inner light is "closed," but on Shabbos it is "opened" — Shabbos is when the penimiyus radiates and the blockage of the nega can be undone.
"It is a sign between Me and Bnei Yisrael" (Shemos 31:17).
Shabbos is the os (sign) uniquely between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael — the distinguishing mark of their special bond, which is precisely what enables the inner light to be revealed.
For through the Holy One, Blessed is He, spreading a sukkah of peace on Shabbos, by this there is a distinction from the nations, and they cannot intermingle.
On Shabbos Hashem spreads His "sukkas shalom" over Bnei Yisrael, setting them apart from the nations so that the umos (nations) — and the concealment they bring — cannot mix in. This separation is what clears the way for the inner light.
And therefore one is able to open the penimiyus for Bnei Yisrael.
Once the intermingling of the nations is barred on Shabbos, the path is clear: the penimiyus of Bnei Yisrael can be "opened" and shine forth, reversing the closure of the nega.
And therefore this is the sign: one in whom the nega is not in the essence is healed with the coming of Shabbos Kodesh.
Here is the test. For a Jew, affliction is never essential but only external; so when Shabbos arrives and the inner light shines, the nega is healed — proof that the blockage was never part of his true self.
Summary: A nega is a "closing-off" of the inner light, rooted in the body-garment that came from Adam's sin; for a Jew it is never essential but only an external blockage. At Matan Torah even the body was rectified and there were no nega'im, but after the sin they returned, paralleling the concealment of galus while the wicked fill the world. Shabbos, the sign between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael, spreads a sukkah of peace that separates them from the nations and opens their penimiyus — so the affliction that is not "in the essence" is healed when Shabbos Kodesh arrives.
