Balak תרל”ב
כסה כו’ עין הארץ.
(Bamidbar 22:5) “Behold the Nation that has left Mitzrayim, behold they have covered the ‘eye’ of the land”
היא הסתכלות ארציות שבנ”י האירו להיות הראי’ רק אל הפנימיות בכל דבר.
This (idea of the ‘eye of the land’) is referring to the perception when looking towards the ground (focused on phyiscality). For Bnei Yisrael had enlightened (the world) that everything that one sees will always be focused on the internality of it. (The spiritual life force that it contains).
ולבטל הסתכלות חיצוני מה שנראה לכאורה בעין הגשמיי שיש התנגדות מעניני עוה”ז להקדושה. אבל באמת אינו רק הסתר ואחיזת עינים שלא לראות האמת.
They nullified any focus on the externality, that seemingly with a phyiscal perception, opposes holiness. However in truth it is just a cover and trickery not to see the real truth. (The physical power is to cover up the holiness. Bnei Yisrael were nullifying this power, through their holiness and revelation of HaShem in the world).
וע”ז חרה להם [ועמ”ש לקמן]:
It was this (revelation) that angered them (Balak and Bilaam). [See what we have written later, וירא.]
יזל מים מדליו
(Bamidbar 24:7) Water shall flow from their branches-מדליו.
חז”ל דרשו הזהרו בבני עניים שמהם תורה יוצאת כו’
Our sages explain (Nedarim 81a) “Be wary of the children of the poor, for it is from them where Torah comes forth”.
שהכנעה אמיתיות להשי”ת הוא הדלי להמשיך המים מבאר מים חיים כמ”ש חז”ל יורדת למקום נמוך כמשל הדלי כפי מה שיורד למטה יותר עד המקור. כן מעלה מים.
This is referring to the true subjegation to HaShem, which is like a bucket-דלי, which draws the water from a well. As ou sages explain it is able to go deep downto a low place. This is the idea of lowering a bucket, the lower it goes to the deepest depths, so too it can draw forth water.
וכן הכלי לקבל מים חיים הוא הביטול להשורש. [והוא כדמיון השקה שמטהר כנ”ל]:
Similarly the vessel to draw forth the livign waters (of the Torah) is the nullification to the source. (Through nullifying one’s desires to the will of HaShem, one is able to connect better to the source of everything, and draw forth the words of Torah.
[This is the idea of השקה – when water that is impure joins and connects to pure water, it all becomes pure.
אא”ז מורי ז”ל הגיד על המדרש שאמר בלעם טוב להיות נעבד מע’ אומות והשיב הקב”ה טוב פת חריבה כו’.
The Chidushei Harim explained the Midrash (Bamidbar Rabbah 20:18) Bilaam said to HaShem wouldn’t it be better to be served by all 70 nations, than just from Bnei Yisrael?! HaShem replied to him that the mere dry menachot korban, is more precious to them Him than the many ריב offerings of the nations of the world. For they want to cause friction between Bnei Yisrael and HaShem.
אף שכל אומה תתן כחה להכניע להקב”ה.
Now even though all the nations do give their strength to HaShem, and are nullified (ultimately) to HaShem. (So why are their offerings not wanted)?
מ”מ אינה באמת כמ”ש חז”ל מה דעבדין לגרמייהו כו’.
However they are only subject to HaShem for their own selfish gains. This is as our sages explain (Baba Basra 10b) whatever good the nations of the world do, is just for their own gains.
הרי במה שהכניע עצמו בלעם הרשע לפנים ואמר אם יתן לי כו’ לא אוכל לעבור כו’ ומזה עצמו נלמד רוח גבוהה שלו.
This (too is apparent in the teachings of our sages) that we actually learn that Bilaam was very haughty, from his own words of subjugation to HaShem: If Balak were to give me a house full of silver and gold I cannot transgress the words of HaShem.
והחילוק הוא נקודה האמיתיות שסט”א מכניע כדי לגנוב ולעלות.
The distinction is that the real point of the negative forces is to humble themsleves just to ‘steal’ and gain a higher level (through trickery and fakeness)
ואנחנו בני ישראל גם העליות שמבקשין מהשי”ת שנוכל להתקרב אליו כדי להכניע ולשוב ליראתו באמת.
Yet with us, Bnei Yisrael, even the times when we are elavated, we also want those to be just for the sake of being able to be close to Him, and to be more subjected, to return to Him and truly fear Him.
וזהו סוף הרצון שבישראל לבוא לההכנעה [וזהו נפש שפלה שרוצה להישאר כך]:
This is the ultimate desire of Bnei Yisrael to truly attain real submission. [This is the idea of נפש שפלה low of spirit (true humility), that we want to remain at].
בפ’ זכר נא כו’ גם בגמ’ בקשו לקבוע פ’ בלק בק”ש בכל יום.
Regarding the pasuk (Michah 6:5) My nation remember what Balak…and Bilaam ploted against you”. The Gemara (Brachos 12b) states that our sages wanted to institute the parsha of Bilaam into the Shma prayer.
כי צריך אדם להיות חזק בעבודת השי”ת להאמין כי אף כל הסט”א ומתנגדים להקדושה כולם מתבטלין לרצון הקב”ה ורק כשאדם הולך בדרך אמת
This (is so important) becasue is a person must always strengthen himself in service of HaShem, and believe that even though all the negative forces, oppose the holinness, they are nevertheless nullified to HaShem. However it is only when one follows the path of truth.
שהרי בלעם על כרחו בירך אותם כענין שכ’ בעל כרחו יענה אמן
For Bilaam unwillingly was forced to bless Bnei Yisrael against his will. Just as the evil angel is forced to say Amen. (When a man comes home and the house is in order for Shabbos, the good angel blesses the home that this is how it should be next week, and the evil angel is compelled to say Amen.)
(So too because Bnei Yisrael were following the correct path, Bilaam was nullified to the holiness and was compelled to bless Bnei Yisrael).
ודבר זה נוהג בכל זמן לכל איש ישראל שחושבין עליו עצות רעות וע”ז מבקשין הפר עצתם כו’:
This is something tat applies at all times to Bnei Yisrael, when they (the negtive forces) have wicked plans against them. It is in regard to this that we say “swiftly thwart their counsel”.
וירא בלק כו’ ויגר כו’ מאוד כי רב הוא.
(Bamidbar 22:2-3) And Balak saw…and Moav became very afraid for they (Bnei Yisrael) were very numerous – כי רב הוא.
כתיב מה רב טובך כו’ אור הגנוז כו’
It states (Tehillim 31:2) “How numerous -רב is Your goodness”. The Zohar (3:88a) explains that this is referring to the hidden light (with which HaShem created the world, and which is the source of all goodness in the world…This light is hidden for the righteous in the world to come.
כי הקב”ה גנז אור התורה במעשה בראשית וע”ז כ’ וירא אלקים כו’ כל אשר עשה כו’ טוב מאוד ודרשו חז”ל על מה”מ ויצה”ר ע”ש.
This is because HaShem has hidden the light of Torah in creation. This is what is referred to (Bereishis 1:31) “And Elokim saw all that He had created and it was very good”. Our sages explain that this is referring to the angel of death and the evil inclination.
ועבודתינו הוא למצוא הארה הגנוזה ואז נתגלה האמת ומכניעין הכל להקב”ה.
Our mission is to find the light tat is hidden in the world, and by doing so reveal the truth, and subjegate everything to HaShem.
ובנ”י דור המדבר כן היו שהאירו אור הגנוז בכל מקום מסעם.
This was what Bnei Yisrael in the generation of the wilderness were doing. For the lit up the hidden light in every place they encamped in.
וכתיב וירא בלק שבע”כ ראה מה שנתגלה כבוד מלכותו עין בעין נראה כו’ וזה הי’ נקרא לבלק הרשע כיסוי עינים כמ”ש כסה כו’ עין הארץ. כי אין הרשע יכול להסתכל באמת.
This is what is meant by the words (ibid) “And Balak saw”. Balak saw, against his will, how the revelation of the dominion of Heaven was being revealed with such clarity. For someone as wicked as Balak this is called “covering of the eye”. As Balak himself said (Bamidbar 22:5) “Bnei Yisrael are covering the eye of the land”. For the wicked cannot bear to face the truth. (!)
ויגר כו’ מאוד מבחי’ מאוד הנ”ל שהיה עומד שיבררו בנ”י כל הבירור כראוי וז”ש כי רב הוא כנ”ל.
“And Moav was very – מאוד afraid” This is referring to the concept mentioned above: מאוד referring to the goodness of HaShem. For Bnei Yisrael were about to revela and clarify everything as it is supposed to be (the ultimate revelation of HaShem). This is the idea of for they were very – רב numerous.
וקודם שהלכו בנ”י לא”י הי’ זה הכנה להתקשר באור הגנוז כנ”ל.
Before Bnei Yisrael had gone to Eretz Yisrael, the preparation was to really connect to this hidden light.

[This is the concept of Eretz Yisrael, which is the center point of the entire world, as the Zohar Vayera (1:108b) explains.
