Balaks plea to Bilam for help has a strange connection to food and eating: “Now they will completely eat away the nation just as an ox eats the entire vegetation”
There are 4 levels of status in creation, inanimate, plants, animals, and man. Now each level provides sustenance for the level above it. The same concept can be found with the Neshama. It can only remain in the body if the body is properly fed. This is interesting because the neshama doesn’t actually get any sustenance from the food, yet the food is what keeps it connected to the body.
This concept applies to all the levels, that when they provide for the stage above it, the sustenance feeds the lower self.

We also find the highest level of man is divided into two parts, the gentiles provide ‘sustenance’ for Bnei Yisrael. This is hinted to on several occasions in the Torah: “You will eat all the nations”, “They are our bread” etc. The mission of Bnei Yisrael is to remove the hidden sparks of holiness that have been ‘swallowed’ by the nations of the world. This too demonstrates that just as in physicality the lower levels provide for the higher levels, so too in spirituality the lower levels provide for the higher levels. This is done through the words of Torah and Tefila (in our mouths) that we extract the holiness from the nations of the world.
In essence this is actually a good thing for the nations of the world, because it is through this that they have meaning and connection to a higher reality, however they often object “the wicked destroy the world…”.

Yesod: Each level of creation provides sustenance for the level above it. Even though the higher self doesn’t actually get sustenance from the lower level, yet to remain attached to the lower self requires this sustenance.
So too on a spiritual level Bnei Yisrael gets their sustenance from the nations of the world. It is through the words of Torah and tefila that they are able to extract the holiness. Indeed this actually gives meaning and value to the nations of the world, however they often are not interested and land up destroying the world.
