Hanukkah as Spiritual Renewal For תרל”ד 5

“Chanuka brings renewal, for every miracle brings renewal from the root of nature.”

The Sefat Emet teaches that a miracle does not break nature but reveals the divine root within nature, bringing a renewed spiritual vitality.

“For nature also has its root above; therefore, through the miracle we can also feel, in this world, that renewal.”

Since the natural world originates in the spiritual realm, miracles enable us to sense this higher vitality even within mundane experience.

“It is written: ‘I surely hoped in the Lord… He raised me from the pit of tumult, from the muddy mire… and He placed in my mouth a new song.’”

The cited verses describe emergence from constriction into renewed praise, a pattern the Sefat Emet associates with Chanuka.

“It appears that this refers to Chanuka.”

The movement from darkness and sinking to renewal mirrors the spiritual essence of Chanuka.

“And it seems that the power of the Greeks greatly prevailed over Israel, who were in darkness and sunk into habitual nature, as it is said: ‘to make them forget.’”

The Greek oppression pushed Israel into spiritual dullness, dominated by natural habit and forgetfulness.

“To bring them into a state of forgetfulness and habitual nature—the opposite of renewal.”

The goal of Greek influence was to replace living renewal with static routine.

“And all four kingdoms act similarly—to submerge Israel in worldly vanities.”

The Sefat Emet frames all exilic powers as forces that try to drown Israel in material distraction.

“Therefore, in each deliverance from a kingdom, there remains in these days an opening of redemption, and it is called ‘Chanuka’ from the phrase ‘educate (train) the youth.’”

Each redemption leaves behind a spiritual opening; Chanuka is linked to initiation and fresh beginnings.

“As it is said: a convert is like a newborn child.”

Renewal is akin to spiritual rebirth, free from prior states of constriction.

“And so too in an exile of idolatrous forces, as it is written: ‘They have driven me away… from cleaving to the heritage of the Lord.’”

Exile is portrayed as being pushed away from divine connection, requiring renewed attachment.

“Therefore, when God performed the miracle, they began anew to accept His sovereignty with a whole heart.”

The miracle awakened a fresh, wholehearted recommitment to divine service.

“And from this renewal, something remains for all generations.”

The spiritual energy unlocked then continues to be accessible in every Chanuka.

“And when a person awakens himself during the days of Chanuka, he receives assistance from the renewal of Chanuka, as explained above.”

Personal effort during Chanuka is met with divine support rooted in the original miracle’s enduring renewal.

The Sefat Emet teaches that Chanuka reveals the divine root within nature. Greek influence sought to trap Israel in habit and forgetfulness, but the miracle reopened the path of renewal. This renewing force remains available in every generation for anyone who seeks to awaken themselves during Chanuka.
