Transforming the Yetzer Hara through Torah

On the pasuk: "Who can grant that this heart of theirs should remain..." (Devarim 5:26).
Hashem expresses the wish that the yiras Shomayim Bnei Yisrael had at Har Sinai should stay with them always. The Sefas Emes will explain what kind of "heart" this is.
For it is written "vayyitzer" (and He formed) — Chazal expounded this as two formations: one for this world and one for the World to Come.
The double yud in "vayyitzer" hints that man was created with two dimensions, one for olam hazeh and one for olam haba.
These two are hinted at by the yetzer tov and the yetzer hara, as Chazal said: "With all your heart" — with both of your inclinations.
The two formations correspond to the two yetzarim (inclinations), and we are commanded to serve Hashem with both of them.
If so, man was created to serve Hashem even through the formation belonging to this world.
The avodah is not only with the holy side of a person, but also to harness the worldly yetzer hara for Hashem's service.
And indeed, at the time of Kabbalas haTorah, Bnei Yisrael had the true intention of how to serve Hashem even within the form of this world.
At Matan Torah Bnei Yisrael reached the awareness that even the physical world can become a vessel for serving Hashem.
See the Zohar HaKadosh on Va'eschanan, that the yetzer hara is like iron, and when it comes into the fire of Torah it is transformed to become entirely fire.
Just as cold iron placed in fire becomes glowing fire itself, so the Torah does not merely subdue the yetzer hara but transforms it into a force of holiness.
Therefore on Atzeres (Shavuos) there is a nullification of the yetzer hara, and according to all opinions we require "lachem" (it must be for yourselves).
Because Shavuos is the day Torah neutralizes the yetzer hara, all agree the festival must include physical enjoyment "for yourselves" — the body itself is now elevated to holiness.
This is the essential meaning of "there is no free man except one who toils in Torah" (Avos 6:2).
True freedom is freedom from the yetzer hara, and only Torah, which transforms the yetzer hara into fire, makes a person genuinely free.
However, Moshe Rabbeinu had no yetzer hara in him at all, as it is written "that he was good" and "he was a man of Elokim."
Moshe stood on a level entirely above the yetzer hara; for him there was nothing to transform, since he was already wholly good.
But Hashem said "they have done well in what they spoke," and Chazal expounded the word "heitivu" (done well) as connected to the kindling (hatavah) of the menorah lamps and the ketores — see there. This is the hint that Bnei Yisrael understood that one must repair this world as well.
Even though Moshe had no yetzer hara, Hashem praised Bnei Yisrael's request, because they grasped the deeper avodah of "fixing the lamps" — drawing holiness down into olam hazeh itself.
This is the meaning of "this heart of theirs" — like a pure heart (b'rei levav) — that there should be such a nullification of the yetzer hara all the days.
Hashem's wish is that the transformed, purified heart Bnei Yisrael attained at Sinai, with the yetzer hara nullified, should endure permanently.
And in this manner the avodah of human beings rises above that of the angels.
Precisely because man must struggle with and transform a yetzer hara, his service surpasses that of the malachim, who have no such challenge.
Summary: Man was formed with two yetzarim so that he could serve Hashem even within the physical world. At Matan Torah Bnei Yisrael grasped this avodah, and the fire of Torah does not merely subdue the yetzer hara but transforms it into holiness — which is why human service, born of struggle, rises even above the angels.
