Four Sons and Inner Redemption

כנגד ארבעה בנים כו'.

"Corresponding to the four sons, etc."

The Sefat Emet introduces the theme of the four sons.

נראה שהוא נגד הארבע לשונות של גאולה.

"It appears that this corresponds to the four expressions of redemption."

He links the four sons to the four divine promises of redemption in Exodus.

שהגאולה הי' מכל הד' גליות.

"For the redemption was from all four exiles."

He teaches that the Exodus spiritually contained redemption from all future exiles.

ושאלות הללו יש בכל איש ישראל.

"And these questions exist within every Jew."

The four sons are archetypes inside each person.

מצד חקירות השכל שעי"ז היצה"ר מהרהר אחר החוקים ועל זה צריך להיות התשובה מוכן בלב האדם כי לעשות רצון השי"ת יש מזה יותר טעם ושמחה מהבנת טעם המצוה.

"For intellect inquires, and through this the evil inclination questions the statutes; therefore the answer must be prepared in one’s heart, for doing God’s will brings more taste and joy than understanding the reason for the commandment."

Intellectual questioning can be misused by the yetzer hara, so one must answer internally with devotion surpassing rational explanation.

וזה אין מפטירין כו'.

"And this is the meaning of 'We do not conclude…'"

He references the halakhah about not eating after the afikoman.

שטעם מצוה של מצה אף שאין בו טעם. מתוק לו יותר ממטעמים.

"For the taste of the mitzvah of matzah—even though it has no taste—is sweeter than delicacies."

Obedience itself becomes spiritually sweet, surpassing physical enjoyment.

והרשע פורק עול ממש. מה העבודה.

"But the wicked one truly casts off the yoke: ‘What is this service?’"

The wicked son rejects authority outright, questioning the value of service.

ואומרו לכם פי' מה כוחו של בו"ד לעבוד להשי"ת.

"And his saying ‘to you’ means: what power does this creature of flesh and blood have to serve God?"

The wicked son denies human spiritual capacity and divine providence.

ועי"ז מהרהר אחר השגחה עליונה כמ"ש בספרים.

"And through this he doubts the higher providence, as written in the books."

His question spirals into theological denial.

והתשובה. בעבור זה.

"And the answer is: ‘Because of this.’"

We answer by affirming that God values human action immensely.

פי' ע"י שהוא בו"ד ואין לו שכל כראוי חשוב לפניו ית' עבודתינו יותר ממלאכי עליון.

"Meaning: precisely because he is flesh and blood and lacks perfected intellect, our service is more precious before God than that of the highest angels."

Human limitation elevates human service.

ושאלת התם ע"י התמימות כשהקב"ה נותן איזה הארה בחסדו בא האדם לידי התנשאות באומרו מה זאת.

"And the question of the simple son: through innocence, when God grants some illumination, a person may come to self‑importance, saying: ‘What is this?’"

The simple son risks misinterpreting divine gifts as personal merit.

וצריך לידע שהוא רק בחסד עליון.

"And he must know that it is solely through divine grace."

Any spiritual insight is a gift, not an achievement.

וזה התשובה בחוזק יד כו' בלי זכיות האדם.

"And this is the answer: ‘With a strong hand,’ etc.—not through human merit."

Redemption is granted despite, not because of, human worthiness.

ושאינו יודע לשאול הוא בגלות המר שא"י כלל איך לפתוח הלב וע"ז נאמר את פתח לו.

"And the one who does not know how to ask is in a bitter exile, unable to open his heart at all; of him it is said: ‘You shall open for him.’"

This represents spiritual paralysis requiring compassionate initiation from outside.

וע"ז נותנים השבח.

"And for this we give praise."

We thank God for enabling even the closed heart to begin awakening.

שגאולת מצרים הי' בכל הד' מיני גליות בכלל ובפרט שנמצא בחי' אלו בכל אחד מישראל.

"For the redemption from Egypt contained all four kinds of exiles, both generally and particularly, for these qualities exist in every Jew."

Each person experiences these spiritual exiles internally.

ונק' בנים שבאמת נגמר הבנין ע"י החקירות הללו בלב האדם כשזוכה לבוא לדרך האמת ולצאת מהבלי עולם הזה ועניניהם.

"And they are called ‘sons,’ for truly the inner structure is completed through these inquiries in the heart, when one merits to come to the path of truth and to leave the vanities of this world and its matters."

These inner struggles are necessary stages of spiritual growth, culminating in authentic service.

Summary: The four sons correspond to four expressions of redemption and four inner states within every Jew. Each question represents a spiritual struggle, and each answer guides the soul toward sincere service and liberation.
