Balancing Strength and Devotion

Beshalach · תרנ"ה (1894) · Essay 1

“In the Midrash: ‘My dove, in the clefts of the rock.’”

The Sefat Emet begins by invoking the Midrash on this verse, which describes Israel as God's dove, hidden and protected.

“It should have said simply ‘dove,’ etc.; for with regard to Me they are like a simple, trusting dove.”

Before God, Israel’s nature is pure trust and simplicity, like an innocent dove.

“But toward the nations they are like lions, etc.”

In contrast, Israel displays strength and fierceness when confronting hostile nations.

“The matter is that a Jew must possess all traits for the sake of His Name, as the Mishnah teaches: ‘Be bold as a leopard, light as an eagle,’ etc.”

Service of God requires a full range of qualities, even opposing ones, each activated for holy purposes.

“Even though these traits contradict one another, they are all necessary for serving the Creator.”

The coexistence of opposing traits forms the complete spiritual toolkit for divine service.

“And at times one must use the trait of boldness to battle the Sitra Achra.”

There are moments when assertiveness is needed to confront spiritual negativity.

“So too in the Egyptian exile, Israel used the aspect of lions, as it is written: ‘For they are vigorous women.’”

In Egypt, Israel had to draw on fierce resilience symbolized by lions.

“But the true trait unique to Israel is to be drawn after God like a dove.”

The essential spiritual nature of Israel is gentle attachment and faithful following.

“And their use of boldness comes to them from the nations, as in: ‘One nation shall strengthen itself against another.’”

Strength and confrontation arise from external pressures, not Israel’s inner core.

“And similarly: ‘The wicked draw the sword,’ etc.; but Israel inherently possesses the voice, not the sword.”

Israel’s true power is spiritual voice—prayer, Torah—not physical weaponry.

“And in the Exodus it is written: ‘And fifty rose’—that they acquired this trait in Egypt.”

Through suffering and struggle, Israel gained the resilience needed for redemption.

“And now, at the Splitting of the Sea, the primary service became self‑nullification and faith.”

At the Sea, the inner mode shifted from struggle to surrender and trust.

“Then: ‘God will fight for you.’”

Once Israel enters a state of pure faith, God takes over the battle.

“And these two modes are the aspects of Jacob and Israel: Jacob associated with struggle, ‘and his hand grasping,’ etc.”

‘Jacob’ symbolizes effort, wrestling, and human initiative.

“But the name Israel signifies being drawn after God and nullifying all wisdom and understanding.”

‘Israel’ represents yielding to divine guidance beyond intellect.

“Therefore it is written: ‘Why do you cry out? … Speak to the children … that they journey.’”

Once redeemed, Israel must act in faith, moving forward without hesitation.

“Meaning: Since they were already redeemed and were occupied in journeying after His cloud of glory, they had only to go forward and hold fast to faith, as it is said: ‘Faith is sufficient,’ etc.”

With redemption underway and God visibly guiding them, their sole task was steadfast trust.

Summary: Israel contains many traits, but its essence is the dove-like quality of faithful attachment. Struggle derives from external forces, while true service is trust and self-nullification. At the Sea, Israel shifts from the Jacob mode of battle to the Israel mode of pure faith, enabling God to fight on their behalf.
