“Men of understanding established eight days.”

He opens by explaining that those with spiritual insight fixed Chanuka as eight days.

It is stated in the Gemara that the reason of Beit Shammai is corresponding to the festival offerings of Sukkot.

Beit Shammai understands the decreasing candles of Chanuka as paralleling the decreasing bull-offerings of Sukkot.

It appears that they linked the days of Chanuka to Sukkot, for in that year Israel surely succeeded in Tishrei in repentance and prayer, since the entire year depends on the writing and sealing of Tishrei.

He explains that the spiritual success of Israel in the High Holidays overflowed into later months, giving Chanuka its root in Sukkot.

And they understood that these days are illuminations from the festival of Sukkot.

Chanuka carries forward the spiritual light first opened during Sukkot.

And through their success on Sukkot in the aspect of the festival offerings, by which the power of the seventy nations decreases, this was completed in actuality on Chanuka, and this is what it means that in wisdom they established eight days like the days of the festival.

The diminishing of the nations’ power that begins on Sukkot culminates in the victory of Chanuka; thus the eight days reflect Sukkot’s spiritual structure.

And it may be said that they immediately sensed that Greece would fall that year, as in “their shadow has departed and the Lord is with us,” and as the Ramban writes, this is the removal of the ‘shadow’ on Hoshana Rabbah night.

Already in Tishrei they perceived a divine sign that the Greek empire’s protection had vanished.

Therefore they strengthened themselves after the festival until their hand prevailed over the wicked.

This spiritual awareness emboldened them to fight and win.

But the reason of Beit Hillel adds that after the fall of the wicked, the horns of Israel were elevated, and this was the primary intention.

Beit Hillel emphasizes not the fall of evil but the rising of Israel’s spiritual stature.

And my grandfather of blessed memory explained similarly that the two aspects are found in the candle, which both illuminates and burns—corresponding to increasing and decreasing.

The candle symbolizes both the destruction of evil and the elevation of holiness.

And these are the aspects of praise for the elevation of Israel’s horn and thanks for the lowering of the horn of the wicked.

Both spiritual movements—uplift of Israel and downfall of evil—are recognized in the Chanuka lights.

And both are true.

The dual perspectives of Beit Shammai and Beit Hillel express two complementary truths.

Summary: Chanuka’s eight days echo the spiritual processes begun on Sukkot—diminishing the nations’ power and elevating Israel. The Sefat Emet shows how Beit Shammai and Beit Hillel each capture one side of this dual movement, both embodied in the Chanuka lights.
