Light Beyond Time

“In the mitzvah of the Chanukah lamp, a radiance from the lights of the Menorah sparkles forth.”
The Sefat Emet teaches that lighting the Chanukah candles draws forth a spiritual illumination rooted in the original Menorah of the Temple.
“For in those days they lit through a miracle, and every miracle is above nature and has no specific place or time; therefore it shines everywhere and at all times.”
Miracles transcend natural limitations, and their spiritual light is not confined to any particular location or moment—they remain universally accessible.
“But why specifically in these days, if it is above time?”
He raises the question: if miracle‑light is beyond time, why is Chanukah bound to specific dates?
“Because not all times are prepared to receive illuminations that are above time, but these days in which the miracle occurred were prepared to receive these illuminations.”
The days of Chanukah were spiritually refined by the miracle itself, making them uniquely capable of receiving and revealing transcendent light.
“And this is the meaning of ‘in those days, at this time’: ‘those’ (hahem) is a term of hiddenness, referring to the lights of the miracles, which are revealed in this time, since this time was refined through the miracles that occurred in it.”
The phrase ‘in those days, at this time’ means that the hidden miracle‑lights from the past now shine in the present because the time of Chanukah itself was elevated and purified by the miracles.
Summary: Although miracle‑light is above time and space, only certain days—those transformed by miracles—can receive and reveal such illumination, which is the essence of Chanukah.
