Temple Light Overcoming Darkness

מה שהיה הנס בנרות.

That the miracle occurred through the lamps.

The Sefat Emet begins by establishing that the Chanuka miracle manifested specifically through light, the lamps of the Menorah.

ואיתא נמי במדרש וחושך על פני תהום זו יון שהחשיכה עיניהם של ישראל ע"ש פרשת בראשית.

And it is stated also in the Midrash: “And darkness was upon the face of the deep” — this refers to Greece, which darkened the eyes of Israel, as explained in Parashat Bereishit.

The Midrash identifies Greek oppression with primordial darkness, emphasizing their spiritual tactic of blinding Israel’s vision.

וקשה דבכל גלות נמי הרשעים מחשיכין.

But this is difficult, for in every exile the wicked also darken Israel.

The Sefat Emet raises a question: what distinguishes the Greek darkness from all others?

אבל משום שזה הי' בזמן הבית ומביהמ"ק יצא אורה לכל העולם.

However, the reason is that this occurred during the time of the Temple, and from the Temple light would go forth to the entire world.

The uniqueness of Greek darkness lies in that it attacked a period when the Temple’s light actively radiated outward.

ואותן הרשעים החשיכו שלא הי' יכול להתגלות הארת ביהמ"ק.

And those wicked ones darkened so that the illumination of the Temple could not be revealed.

Greece obstructed the revelation of the Temple’s spiritual light, not merely Israel’s internal clarity.

לכן כאשר זכינו לצאת מתחת ידם שילם לנו הקב"ה שהאור מביהמ"ק האיר עוד בפסיעה יתירה גם מבחוץ.

Therefore, when we merited to be freed from their control, the Holy One repaid us by causing the light of the Temple to shine even further outward, beyond its former boundary.

Redemption brought not only restoration but expansion: the Temple’s light extended even farther than before.

והוא כמ"ש גולל אור מפני חושך והוא לטובה כדי שלא יתערב סט"א בהאור.

And this is as it is written: “He rolls away light before darkness,” and this is for the good, so that the Other Side not intermingle with the light.

God sometimes withdraws light before darkness in order to protect the purity of the light from corruption.

ואח"כ כשמתגבר האור גולל חושך מפני אור כנ"ל.

And afterward, when the light grows stronger, He rolls away the darkness before the light, as explained above.

Once the light reaches sufficient strength, darkness itself is pushed aside, revealing the full radiance intended.

Summary: Greek oppression blocked the outward‑shining light of the Temple, unlike other exiles. The Chanuka miracle restored and even expanded this light. God sometimes conceals light to preserve it from impurity, but ultimately causes it to overpower and dispel darkness.
