Inner Divine Spark Endures

The matter of why the miracle occurred specifically through oil sufficient for one night, and a miracle was done with it.

The Sefat Emet opens by explaining that the form of the miracle itself carries meaning: the remaining oil was minimal, yet it became the vessel through which divine salvation manifested.

To make known that there always remains one point in the souls of Israel through which they can be saved by God.

This minimal oil symbolizes the indestructible spiritual point within every Jew that enables renewal and redemption.

And my master and grandfather, of blessed memory, said: that single cruse sealed with the seal of the High Priest is the point about which it is said, “I am your shield,” which God promised to Abraham our father, who is called “priest”—“You are a priest forever”—and is called “the greatest man among the giants.”

The sealed cruse represents the primal covenantal point granted to Abraham, a protective inner essence sealed against corruption.

And it may also be said that this refers to Aaron the High Priest, as the Ramban cites in the name of the Midrash: “Yours endures forever.”

The enduring “cruse” can also be viewed as the eternal legacy of Aaron’s priesthood.

For the trait of Aaron is likewise kindness and love.

Aaron’s spiritual heritage endures because it is rooted in unconditional love and kindness.

And it is written: “Many waters cannot extinguish… the love”; and Aaron the Priest planted God’s love in the hearts of Israel, so that one sealed cruse would remain, as above.

The enduring point in each soul is the result of the divine love Aaron implanted, a love unquenchable even by adversity.

[And it may be said: “They established and made them” based on these two aspects—that in these days each year the point is awakened and expands for eight days.]

The annual recurrence of Chanuka reopens this inner point and allows it to spread outward over eight days.

And this is renewed every Chanuka: that this point is opened, and through lighting the candles we merit to broaden and expand this point; therefore the mitzvah of Chanuka is “a candle for each person and his household,” and the “enhancers,” etc., for according to a person’s state he can expand this illumination more and more.

Chanuka gives access to expanding the inner spark; the differing levels of performance reflect each soul’s capacity to draw forth more light.

Summary: The Chanuka miracle reveals the eternal inner point within each Jew—sealed, indestructible, rooted in the love of Abraham and Aaron—and each year the candles reopen and expand this point’s illumination.
