Wisdom Rooted Above and Below

Chanukah · תר"ס (1899) · Essay 3

Sages · Divine Will · Rabbinic Decrees · Spiritual Roots

In the Midrash on Beha'alotekha: “Do not let the commandments of the Elders be light in your eyes, for they decree upon Me as well, and I fulfill them...”

The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash, emphasizing that rabbinic enactments carry Divine authority — even God, so to speak, upholds them.

And it brings the verse: “The words of the sages are like goads, guiding the cow along the furrow.”

This illustrates how rabbinic teachings direct and align a person’s inner path, just as a goad guides an animal straight.

“And like firmly planted nails.”

The sages’ words are also compared to fixed nails, stable and enduring.

They have the strength of iron and the rootedness of deep plantings.

Rabbinic enactments possess both firmness and spiritual rootedness.

The idea is that the enactments and commandments of the Men of the Great Assembly are repairs for the human soul.

These rabbinic decrees refine and elevate a person’s inner life.

And they are repairs above.

Their influence reaches and rectifies spiritual realms.

Nails below.

They anchor holiness in the physical world.

And planted in the supernal root.

Their ultimate source lies in the highest Divine root.

And so regarding Chanuka it is said: “They established them and made them festival days.”

The Sages fixed Chanuka on earth as a holiday.

Meaning: they established them below, and created them above, and the Holy One agrees with them.

Their earthly decree generated a corresponding sanctity in the higher worlds, affirmed by God.

Therefore we read the section of the Princes on Chanuka, as it says: “And the princes drew near...”

This reading parallels the role of leaders bringing offerings and initiating spiritual structure.

And God agreed with them, as it is written: “Take from them.”

The Torah underscores Divine approval of their initiative.

For at the erection of the Mishkan, and likewise in the Temple, the Holy Spirit rested upon the Elders.

The elders received Divine inspiration when establishing sacred institutions.

And all their enactments are the will of the Creator, blessed be He.

Rabbinic decrees express and reveal God’s own desire.

As it is written: “Ask your father and he will tell you” — which is a language of drawing-down.

This verse indicates that teachings of the elders draw down Divine will.

“Nails. Goads.”

Both metaphors describe how the sages anchor and direct holiness.

“Your elders, and they will say to you” — meaning they will tell you the will of your Father in Heaven.

The elders communicate God’s true intention to the people.

Summary: Rabbinic enactments possess Divine authority, acting as both anchors and channels of holiness. Chanuka exemplifies how the Sages establish sanctity below that becomes sanctified above, with God affirming their decrees.
