Hidden and Revealed Miracles

Chanukah · תר"ס (1899) · Essay 4

Miracles · Praise · Gratitude · Divine Names · Salvation

The matter of Hallel and thanksgiving corresponds to the Divine Name Adonai and the Name Ehyeh.

The Sefat Emet teaches that Hallel and Hodaa express two aspects of God’s revelation, reflected in these two names.

For all the wonders of the Holy One, blessed be He, are hidden and revealed.

Every divine act contains both a visible layer and a concealed, inner dimension.

And when miracles were performed for our ancestors, there is Hallel for the salvation that Israel feels and sees.

Hallel corresponds to the part of the miracle that is experienced openly.

But the depth of His wonders cannot be measured or told.

The hidden dimension of the miracle is beyond human comprehension.

As it is written: “And You made for Yourself a great and holy Name in Your world.”

This refers to the unseen rectification effected above through miracles.

And this is the essence of the salvation: the rectification that occurs above.

The deeper miracle is the spiritual repair enacted in the upper realms.

And this is the aspect of thanksgiving—what cannot be seen with the eye.

Hodaa relates to the hidden miracle.

But one understands the hidden from what is revealed.

The visible miracle hints to the unseen depths behind it.

And for this one must give thanks.

Thanksgiving expresses recognition of what lies beyond perception.

And this hidden salvation endures for generations, for it is beyond time.

The concealed aspect of the miracle is eternal.

And this is the Name Ehyeh.

This Divine Name represents transcendence of time.

And likewise with “Halleluyah,” which the Sages said is the greatest of all, for it includes both Name and praise together.

Halleluyah unifies revelation and concealment in a single expression.

It too contains these two Names—Adonai and Ehyeh—which equal Halleluyah in gematria.

“Halleluyah” numerically encodes the dynamic of hidden and revealed.

And in that generation there were great sages, as it is said, “men of understanding… established [the days].”

The sages of the Hasmonean era perceived the depth of the Chanuka miracle.

And they understood that this miracle contained hidden matters.

They recognized the spiritual dimension underlying the physical events.

Therefore they merited to draw a lasting imprint of this miracle for all years.

The hidden aspect of the miracle radiates throughout time.

For this is from the aspect of the Name Ehyeh, as explained above.

Its eternal impact stems from the timeless Divine Name.

The Sefat Emet teaches that Chanuka contains both revealed salvation (Hallel) and hidden salvation (Hodaa), corresponding to the Names Adonai and Ehyeh. The sages perceived the depth of the miracle, enabling its enduring spiritual influence.
