Binding every realm to its heavenly root
In the Midrash: "Hashem knows the days of the wholehearted" — just as they themselves are tamim (whole), so too their years are whole, etc. And why does it say "the years of the life of Sarah" at the very end? Because the years of tzaddikim are beloved before the Holy One, blessed is He, in this world and in the World to Come.
The Sefas Emes opens with the Midrash that the very years of a tzaddik carry a completeness, a tamimus, that endures and is precious before Hashem.
For behold, all things have a root in Heaven.
Everything in the lower world is only a branch; its true source is above.
Whether the dimension of olam (space/world), shanah (time/year), or nefesh (soul) — all of them have a root in Heaven.
The three axes of creation — space, time, and soul — each derive from a heavenly source.
This is the meaning of "Day to day pours forth speech" (Tehillim 19:3).
The pasuk hints that the day above feeds the day below.
The day above speaks to the day below.
Each earthly day receives its flow of life from its corresponding heavenly day.
And the tzaddikim must connect everything back to its root.
The avodah of the tzaddik is to reunite each branch below with its source above.
This is the essence of the name "tzaddik," as Chazal said: he grasps both Heaven and earth.
A tzaddik is one who holds onto both worlds at once, binding the physical to the spiritual.
And this dimension of "tzaddik" exists in the soul (nefesh), as it is written "Noach, Noach," "Avraham, Avraham."
The doubled name signals a person whose lower self below is fully bound to his root above.
For they were united with their root — and then one is called tamim (whole).
Tamimus means the soul below is wholly joined to its source above.
So too in the realm of space: Eretz Yisrael, Yerushalayim, and the Bais Hamikdash — Yerushalayim is so named for this very completeness, as it is written "a city that is joined together" (Tehillim 122:3).
Yerushalayim embodies the same unity in space that the tzaddik embodies in soul — the lower joined to the higher.
And therefore it is called "Tzedek."
The city's very name shares the root of "tzaddik," for it too binds the worlds together.
And so too in the dimension of time and year.
The same principle of joining below to above operates within time itself.
"Shabbos Shalom."
Shabbos is the point of completeness in time, the day that unites the week to its root.
And therefore all the acts of Shabbos are doubled.
The doubling reflects how Shabbos joins the day below to the day above.
The "double bread" (lechem mishneh).
The two loaves express this very doubling — the lower and higher united on Shabbos.
"Remember the day…" — for on it time is elevated to its root.
On Shabbos, time itself rises and reattaches to its heavenly source.
And it all depends on Bnei Yisrael and the tzaddikim, as it is taught: "A tzaddik in a city — he is its glory, its splendor, its majesty."
It is Bnei Yisrael, and the tzaddikim among them, who draw out the hidden glory of every place.
That is, he brings from potential into actuality the splendor, radiance, and majesty that lie in the root of that place.
The tzaddik reveals the latent holiness already present in a place's heavenly source.
And so too in time: the Holy One, blessed is He, renews each day the act of Creation, and it is written "I will awaken the dawn" (Tehillim 57:9) — Chazal expounded: "I awaken the dawn, and the dawn does not awaken me."
The tzaddik does not merely wait for the day's light; he actively awakens and draws down its renewal from above.
Concerning this it is written "to watch at My doors day by day" (Mishlei 8:34) — at the day below and the day above.
One must labor each day to connect the earthly day to its heavenly counterpart.
And these are the two doors and two openings that Chazal expounded.
The "day below" and "day above" are the twin gateways through which the flow descends.
And see what my grandfather, of blessed memory, wrote on this in the name of the Rebbe of Pshischa.
The Sefas Emes points to his grandfather's teaching, citing the Rebbe of Pshischa, on this theme.
And this is "Day by day He loads [good] upon us" (Tehillim 68:20).
Each day a fresh measure of heavenly bounty is laid upon us — but it must be received.
For this is laid upon the tzaddikim: to prepare the days below so that they become vessels (kelim) able to receive the flow (shefa) from those days in Heaven.
The tzaddik's task is to ready the lower day as a fit vessel for the heavenly shefa.
And it is taught in the Gemara: Bais Shammai say — from the first day of the week toward Shabbos.
Bais Shammai held that one should orient all the weekdays toward the coming Shabbos.
But Hillel had a different way: "Blessed is Hashem day by day" — see there in Maseches Beitzah.
Hillel found Hashem's gift renewed within each individual day, blessing Him daily on its own terms.
And these are two levels (madreigos): for Shabbos elevates the day below until it is nullified (bittul) into the root.
Shabbos lifts the lower day so completely that it is subsumed, in bittul, into its heavenly source.
And therefore it is taught: Shabbos is a day of souls (neshamos), and not of the body.
On Shabbos the inner, soul-dimension shines, while the bodily realm recedes.
For when the upper world is revealed, the lower world "is not mentioned by name."
When the higher reality shines forth, the lower world loses its independent standing entirely.
And therefore on Shabbos no "vessel" (mana) is found in it, as it is taught in the Zohar HaKadosh that "all blessings depend upon it" — precisely so.
Shabbos has no separate vessel of its own because it is the very source from which all blessing flows into the week's vessels.
And the way of Bais Hillel is to rectify the weekdays so that they grasp and unite with the days above.
Bais Hillel's path is to elevate each weekday in its own right, binding it to its heavenly day.
This is the dimension of "day by day."
This daily binding of below to above is the meaning of "yom yom."
And this is the matter of the dispute in the Gemara on "And Avraham was old, advanced in days, and Hashem blessed Avraham with everything (bakol)": some say he had no daughter at all, and some say he had a daughter and "Bakol" was her name.
The Sefas Emes will read this Gemara dispute through the same lens of the lower world being readied to receive blessing.
It is as above: for all agree that Avraham Avinu was elevated to the upper world.
Both opinions concede that Avraham rose to the heavenly realm itself.
This is the meaning of "old, advanced in days."
"Coming into days" means he ascended into those heavenly "days" above.
And some say he was literally elevated above nature.
One view: Avraham rose entirely beyond the natural order.
And "Hashem blessed" — in the dimension of Shabbos, upon which "all blessings depend."
His blessing was the Shabbos-like source from which all blessing flows, with no separate vessel — hence "no daughter."
But a "daughter" signifies a measure (middah) and a receiver.
A daughter represents the receiving vessel, the lower world that accepts the flow.
Which is the dimension of the lower world.
The "daughter" is the earthly realm in its capacity to receive.
When it is rectified and ready to receive the blessing.
When the lower world is prepared as a fit vessel, it can hold the blessing.
Therefore some say "the Merciful One did not withhold from him even a daughter" — for he had the dimension of a "daughter," and "Bakol" was her name.
According to this view, Avraham was blessed not only with the source but also with a perfected receiving vessel below.
For it was attached and united to the upper root, as above.
Even his lower, receiving world was so refined that it cleaved fully to its heavenly source.
Summary: Everything in creation — space, time, and soul — has a root in Heaven, and the avodah of the tzaddik is to bind each branch below to its source above. Sarah's years, Yerushalayim, Shabbos, and Avraham's blessing of "bakol" all express this same tamimus: a lower world so refined that it becomes a perfect vessel, united in bittul with its heavenly root.
