במדרש קץ שם לחושך זמן נתן לעולם כמה שנים יעשה באפילה.

“In the Midrash: ‘He set an end to darkness’—He gave the world a set time for how many years it would function in dimness.”

The Sefat Emet introduces the idea that darkness itself has a divinely fixed limit; the world is allowed to remain in a state of spiritual obscurity only for a designated period.

כי אור שנברא בששת ימי בראשית הי' מאיר מסוף העולם ועד סופו והי' למעלה מן הזמן והצמצום וראה הקב"ה שאין העולם כדאי ע"י החטא וגנזו לצדיקים.

“For the light created during the six days of Creation shone from one end of the world to the other and existed beyond time and limitation; and the Holy One saw that the world, due to sin, was not worthy of it, and He hid it for the righteous.”

The original primordial light was infinite and timeless, but sin made the world unfit to receive it openly, so it was reserved for the righteous in a concealed manner.

והגניזה הוא שבכל היגלות הארה מאותו האור. תיכף יורד עמו איזה הסתר וחושך.

“And this concealment means that whenever an illumination from that light is revealed, immediately some concealment and darkness descend with it.”

Any moment of true spiritual illumination is accompanied by a parallel descent of obscurity; the hidden state of the primordial light creates a dual effect of revelation and concealment.

כמ"ש במ"א שע"ז רומז החלום שאחר פרות הטובות מיד עולות אחריהן פרות הרעות.

“As stated elsewhere, this is hinted at in the dream in which, after the good cows, the bad cows immediately rise after them.”

Joseph’s dream symbolizes that spiritual good is always followed by challenge or darkness, reflecting the pattern of illumination paired with concealment.

ולכן כשצריך האדם להשיג איזה הארה צריך מקודם לעבור על הסתרות חושך הנ"ל.

“Therefore, when a person seeks to attain some illumination, he must first pass through the aforementioned concealments and darkness.”

Human spiritual growth requires navigating darkness as a prerequisite for receiving higher light.

והוא בירור הטוב והרע שנעשה אחר החטא וע"ז מברכין על אור וחושך בבוקר ובערב שצריכין להזכיר מדת יום בלילה ומדת לילה ביום שמכל זה נתברר הטוב.

“This is the clarification of good and evil brought about after the sin; and therefore we bless over light and darkness in the morning and evening, for we must mention the quality of day at night and the quality of night by day, for through all this the good is clarified.”

The intertwined blessings of light and darkness reflect the post‑sin reality of mixed good and evil; naming both within each time period refines and elevates the good.

אכן בנ"י בקבלת התורה נתעלו ממדריגה זו ולכן אחר ברכת המאורות קבעו ברכת התורה שהוא למעלה מהזמן.

“Yet Israel, through receiving the Torah, rose above this level, and therefore after the blessing over the luminaries they established the blessing of the Torah, which is beyond time.”

Torah transcends the temporal cycle of light and darkness; Israel’s acceptance of Torah lifted them beyond the mixture of concealment and revelation.

והתערובות והחושך אין לו מגע במה שהוא למעלה מהזמן.

“And the mixture and the darkness have no contact with that which is above time.”

In the timeless realm of Torah, darkness and mixture simply cannot reach or affect the soul.

אכן א"י להשיג מדריגה זו עד שמתקנין מקודם דרך הנ"ל.

“However, one cannot attain this level until first repairing oneself through the aforementioned process.”

To rise into the timeless light of Torah, one must first undergo the earthly work of navigating darkness and refining good and evil.

וזה הי' הקדמת גלות מצרים. עד שזכו אל קבלת התורה.

“And this was the purpose of the preceding Egyptian exile, until they merited receiving the Torah.”

The exile in Egypt served as the foundational process of refinement through darkness, preparing Israel for the timeless revelation of Torah at Sinai.

The Sefat Emet teaches that spiritual light is always accompanied by darkness due to the primordial concealment of the original light. Human growth requires moving through these obscurations. Israel’s journey through Egyptian exile prepared them to transcend time through the Torah, where darkness has no hold.
