Shabbat and the Heavenly Soul
Shabbat · Neshamah Yeterah · Heaven and Earth · Spirituality
“In the Zohar, on the verse ‘From Asher, his bread is rich,’ it is explained that the ‘double bread’ of Shabbat corresponds to the ‘bread of affliction’ and the ‘bread of delight,’ etc.; see there the whole discussion.”
The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Zohar, which reads the verse about Asher’s rich bread as hinting to the dual nature of Shabbat bread—representing both constriction and expansion, physicality and spiritual delight.
“‘Mishneh’ has the same numerical value as ‘the heavens,’ and this is by the power of the soul.”
The doubling of Shabbat bread reflects the heavenly dimension revealed through the soul.
“For a human being contains a soul from the heavens and a body from the earth.”
The dual constitution of the person mirrors heaven and earth.
“And Shabbat is the day of souls, not of the body.”
Shabbat emphasizes the heavenly, soul-oriented aspect of the person rather than the earthly physical aspect.
“And an extra soul descends, which is the portion from the heavens.”
The additional Shabbat soul is literally the heavenly portion granted to the human.
“And this is the meaning of ‘Between Me and the Children of Israel it is a sign… for in six days God made… the heavens…’.”
The sign of Shabbat connects Israel to the heavenly act of creation.
“And since Israel must testify to the creation of the heavens…”
Israel’s role is to affirm creation, especially its heavenly aspect.
“And this is impossible unless a portion of the heavens is given to them.”
One can bear witness only to what one has inward access to; thus Israel must receive a heavenly infusion.
“Therefore Shabbat is the sign upon Israel, for the heavenly portion descends to them.”
Shabbat serves as the marker of this weekly descent of heavenly vitality.
“And the verse ‘The heavens are the heavens of God, and the earth He gave to human beings’—we explained that everything is from the heavens, but it descends in the constriction of ‘earth,’ and its inner essence is not revealed.”
Ordinarily, divine energy is constricted when entering the physical world; its inner light remains hidden.
“But on Shabbat, his bread is rich, and I have already elaborated on this in many places.”
On Shabbat the inner heavenly richness becomes accessible and manifest.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Shabbat reveals the heavenly dimension within the human being. The double bread symbolizes the union of body and soul, with Shabbat granting a heavenly infusion—the extra soul—that allows Israel to testify to creation and experience the hidden inner vitality normally constricted in weekday existence.
