Partnership of Issachar and Zebulun
Partnership · Livelihood · Shabbat · Reward
“Regarding Issachar and Zebulun.”
The Sefat Emet introduces the well‑known partnership between the two tribes.
“Since Zebulun prepared the livelihood of Issachar, therefore Issachar received two portions.”
Zebulun financially supported Issachar’s Torah study, and this support elevated Issachar’s spiritual reward.
“Therefore Issachar is called ‘reward’—a reward for himself and a reward for Zebulun.”
Their partnership is reflected in Issachar’s very name, signifying doubled merit.
“And similar to this are the weekdays, which serve as preparation for Shabbat.”
Just as Zebulun’s worldly labor enables Issachar’s spiritual elevation, so the weekdays prepare the spiritual ascent of Shabbat.
“Therefore on Shabbat there is double bread, and all acts of Shabbat are doubled, for Shabbat receives blessing also on behalf of the weekdays.”
The doubled elements of Shabbat mirror the doubled reward of Issachar and Zebulun: Shabbat’s holiness extends backward to bless even the mundane days that precede it.
Summary: The partnership of Issachar and Zebulun models the relationship between weekdays and Shabbat, where worldly effort enables spiritual elevation, resulting in doubled blessing.
