Avraham's trials withstood through love
Vayeira · Akeidah · ahavah · trials · zechus Avos
In the passage of the Akeidah: "And Avraham arose early in the morning" (Bereishis 22:3).
The Sefas Emes focuses on Avraham's eager rising at dawn to fulfill the command of the Akeidah, which Chazal famously cite as a sign of zerizus (alacrity).
And in the Midrash: "love disrupts the natural order (mekalkeles ha'shurah)."
The Midrash comments that Avraham's love for Hashem caused him to break with normal conduct — for example, saddling his own donkey rather than leaving it to servants.
This is the essential preciousness of the trials of Avraham Avinu, peace be upon him — that he performed them with great love.
What made Avraham's nisyonos so beloved before Hashem was not merely that he passed them, but that he met every one of them out of overflowing ahavah.
As is written in the sefer Chovos HaLevavos.
He alludes to the teaching of the Chovos HaLevavos concerning serving Hashem out of love rather than fear.
And so in the Mishnah: "With ten trials was Avraham Avinu tested, and he withstood them all" (Avos 5:3) — the meaning [of "he withstood"] is that he stood firm in the aspect of love, which is the middah of Avraham Avinu, and his love did not budge a hair's breadth through all the trials, and this is a very great thing.
The Sefas Emes reinterprets "amad" (he withstood): Avraham not only survived the trials, he remained rooted in his defining middah of ahavah, his love unshaken by even a hairsbreadth throughout — and this constancy of love is the truly great accomplishment.
Now, Hashem repays middah ke'neged middah (measure for measure); this is the meaning of "and He brings a redeemer to their children's children, for His Name's sake, with love."
Since Hashem rewards in kind, the redemption He brings to Avraham's descendants is granted specifically "be'ahavah" — with love — corresponding to the love with which Avraham served.
For when Hashem performs kindnesses for Bnei Yisrael in the merit of the Avos, even though they are not worthy on their own account — nevertheless He performs the kindnesses with love, just as Avraham Avinu fulfilled the trials with love.
Even when Yisrael are undeserving in their own right and are saved only through the zechus Avos, Hashem does not extend that kindness grudgingly but "be'ahavah," with the very love that Avraham invested in withstanding his trials — measure for measure.
Summary: The greatness of Avraham's ten trials lay not merely in passing them but in meeting each one out of unshakable love — "love disrupts the natural order" — without his ahavah budging a hairsbreadth, for love was his defining middah. Because Hashem repays measure for measure, He redeems Avraham's descendants "be'ahavah," with love, even when they are unworthy on their own and are saved only through zechus Avos — mirroring the love with which Avraham fulfilled every nisayon.
