Spiritual Growth Through Struggle
Jacob · Exile · Faith · Baal Shem Tov
In the Midrash it says: “his gathering and the gathering of his children,” etc.
The Sefat Emet begins by referencing a Midrash that links Jacob’s settling with the spiritual gathering of his children.
For regarding Esau it is written: “He went to a land because of Jacob.”
Esau leaves in order to separate from Jacob, unable to remain in the same spiritual space.
For Jacob had been all this time with his father.
Jacob’s longstanding attachment to his father Isaac reflects his rootedness in holiness.
Nevertheless, there is a path whose end is thorns.
Even a path that begins in holiness may have obstacles unless one proceeds with purity.
But the righteous walk on a path whose end is straight.
The righteous find an ultimately smooth path, aligned with divine guidance.
And Jacob, peace be upon him, prepared himself to receive the exile, as the Zohar says: “from the dwellings (megurei) meaning fear and dread.”
Jacob enters exile consciously, grounding himself in awe of Heaven.
For although he feared the fulfillment of the verse “your seed shall be strangers,”
Jacob recognizes the divine decree that his descendants must experience exile.
Nevertheless, “the righteous is confident like a young lion.”
Even in fear, the righteous remain bold in trust.
“And Jacob settled…”—from the fears of his father, meaning he settled himself within that very fear.
Jacob transforms inherited fear into a stable spiritual posture.
As taught in the name of the Baal Shem Tov on “From the narrow place I call You”: one who flees during distress is like a pregnant woman—wherever she flees, the fetus goes with her.
Distress cannot be escaped; it must be elevated from within.
So too every sorrow from which new offspring must be born, as it says: “In all sorrow there will be profit.”
Suffering contains hidden spiritual yield.
One need not remove oneself from it, but rather find the help and the offspring within the narrowness itself.
The redemption lies inside the constriction.
Thus it says: “And Jacob settled…” and afterward: “These are the offspring of Jacob…”
His settling within fear gives rise to spiritual offspring.
And this teaches all Israel that the cure is always found within the blow.
Every hardship contains its own healing energy.
And through gathering all the forces inward, then “truth will sprout from the earth.”
Inner unification allows truth to emerge.
And afterward one sees that all the externalities are empty wind and vanity, as said above.
Once truth emerges, falsehood is revealed as insubstantial.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Jacob’s settling expresses a spiritual readiness to face exile from within, finding redemption in the difficulty itself. By gathering inner strength and not fleeing distress, one brings forth new spiritual growth and reveals divine truth.
