Torah and the Covenant of Light
Torah Shebichtav · Torah Shebe’al Peh · Bris Kodesh · Divine Light
“In the verse: ‘the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bow to me,’ etc.”
The Sefat Emet introduces the dream imagery as symbolic elements containing deep spiritual structure.
“To make known that everything depends on the sign of the holy covenant, as it is written: ‘If not for My covenant day and night…’”
He teaches that all cosmic order depends on the covenant, understood here as brit kodesh.
“And the hint of ‘day and night’ refers to Written Torah and Oral Torah, as the Midrash says: ‘Day to day utters speech’—this is Written Torah; ‘night to night’—this is Oral Torah.”
Day and night mirror the two modes of Torah: revealed text and its unfolding through human interpretation.
“And this is the meaning of the two luminaries.”
The sun and moon symbolize these two Torah aspects.
“The greater one, ruling the day, is Written Torah.”
The Written Torah shines with direct, primary illumination.
“And the smaller one, ruling the night, is Oral Torah.”
The Oral Torah illuminates indirectly, through human effort and interpretation.
“And therefore the stars are added.”
The stars symbolize additional points of light—individual souls contributing insight.
“Meaning the righteous who come from you.”
These stars represent the tzaddikim who extend Torah’s light.
“For the Oral Torah depends on the mouths of the children of Israel.”
The Oral Torah is realized through the speech and learning of Israel.
“And there is an imprint of both Written and Oral Torah in every Jew.”
Each person carries a trace of these two lights within.
“And through guarding the sign of the holy covenant, these luminaries shine.”
Purity of covenant awakens and brightens the inner Torah lights.
“As it is written: ‘And God placed them in the firmament of the heavens.’”
This refers spiritually to the placement of these lights within the human soul.
“As stated in the Zohar.”
The Zohar elaborates on the inner placement of these lights.
“And just as this is true in the macrocosm, so too in the individual Jew.”
The cosmic pattern repeats within each person.
“And they are the aspects of the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge.”
The two Torahs correspond to these two archetypal trees.
“Therefore it is written: ‘Yachaveh da‘at.’”
This refers to the articulation of knowledge connected to Oral Torah.
“And the night is called that in which the matter is not explicit in the Written Torah.”
Night symbolizes the realm requiring human understanding to clarify what is hidden.
“And the Oral Torah depends on human understanding.”
Its illumination comes only through human intellectual engagement.
“Only those who learn for its own sake merit to find words of truth in their mouths.”
Pure intention draws true insight.
“And corresponding to these two luminaries are two foreskins: cutting and uncovering.”
The physical mitzvah mirrors the twofold spiritual process.
“And through the mitzvah of circumcision—cutting explicit in the Torah, and uncovering known through tradition, the aspect of Oral Torah—through this mitzvah one merits the light of both Written and Oral Torah.”
Brit milah activates both Torah lights, each through its own dimension.
“And this is ‘My covenant day and night.’”
The covenant upholds and unifies the two modes of Torah.
Summary: The sun, moon, and stars symbolize Written Torah, Oral Torah, and the righteous whose insights illuminate Torah. These lights shine through the covenant, reflected both cosmically and within each Jew, culminating in the unity of ‘My covenant day and night.’
