Unity of Joseph and Jacob

Vayeshev · תרנ"ה (1894) · Essay 1

Joseph · Shabbat · Jacob · Esau · Holy Sparks

“And behold, we were binding sheaves in the field.”

The Sefat Emet opens by explaining that Joseph’s dream hints at a deeper spiritual activity: the gathering and elevating of holy sparks hidden within the world.

“We have already written elsewhere that this refers to the clarification of holy sparks that became mixed.”

The image of binding sheaves symbolizes the human task of sorting and uplifting holy elements embedded within physical creation.

“And this is what the Midrash says: ‘His gathering and the gathering of his sons saved them from Esau and his chiefs.’”

The act of gathering has protective power; unified holiness shields Israel from Esau’s forces.

“And Esau is called ‘a man of the field.’”

Esau’s identity is bound to the physical field, symbolizing unrefined materiality.

“And there is a hint in the Masorah on the phrase ‘and behold we are binding.’”

The Masoretic tradition links this phrase to other verses, suggesting a thematic connection.

“And ‘behold we are in Kadesh…’ near the king of Edom.”

This parallel verse reinforces the association between field‑work symbolism and the spiritual challenge posed by Edom/Esau.

“For the primary labors are in the field: plowing, sowing, harvesting, pressing, threshing.”

The field represents the realm of human labor—where spiritual refinement occurs.

“And this is the hint that the house of Esau is like straw.”

Esau’s power is compared to straw—external, combustible, lacking inner substance.

“As it is written: ‘The hands are the hands of Esau.’”

Esau represents external force, symbolized by hands engaged in material control.

“And straw is a ‘hand’ for the food, for the divine flow becomes clothed in nature and physicality.”

Holiness becomes encased in material husks, just as grain is surrounded by straw.

“And truly all this came after the first sin, as it says: ‘Thorns and thistles it shall bring forth… the grass of the field.’”

The need for labor and refinement is a result of Adam’s sin, which increased mixture and concealment.

“For food must come through chaff and straw.”

Sustenance arrives only after separating waste from nourishment—symbolic of spiritual work.

“And a person must clarify this mixture.”

This is humanity’s mission: to distinguish holy from unholy within the world.

“And this clarification is done during the weekdays.”

Weekdays are the arena for active spiritual refinement.

“And on Shabbat all these labors are forbidden.”

Shabbat is a realm beyond refinement, where holiness shines without effort.

“And Joseph is the aspect of Shabbat, as the Midrash teaches, and he is above these mixtures.”

Joseph embodies a level where holiness manifests without struggle.

“As it is written: ‘The house of Jacob is fire, the house of Joseph is flame…’”

Joseph amplifies Jacob’s holiness, consuming the impurity symbolized by Esau.

“Therefore straw does not rule over Jacob and Joseph.”

The husks of materiality cannot dominate their spiritual level.

“And it is taught: ‘These are the generations of Jacob—Joseph,’ for he resembled Jacob.”

Joseph mirrors Jacob's integrative spiritual role.

“For Jacob includes all three patriarchs.”

Jacob synthesizes the qualities of Abraham, Isaac, and his own path.

“For Abraham and Isaac each represent a single attribute, but Jacob is described as ‘dwelling in two tents,’ mediating and including all three patriarchs.”

Jacob harmonizes the divergent spiritual modes of his fathers.

“Therefore from Abraham and Isaac emerged Ishmael and Esau.”

Because Abraham and Isaac each embody a single trait, imbalance could produce problematic offspring.

“But Jacob’s bed was complete.”

Jacob’s integrative holiness produced only righteous descendants.

“So too Joseph included all the tribes, for each tribe is an independent aspect, and he encompassed them all.”

Joseph, like Jacob, functions as a unifying spiritual root.

“And it is written elsewhere in the name of my grandfather, of blessed memory, that the eleven chiefs of Esau correspond to the eleven curses.”

Esau’s forces parallel forces of spiritual obstruction.

“Thus Joseph is above these eleven.”

Joseph transcends the realm in which these destructive forces operate.

“And Jacob is the gathering of the three patriarchs.”

Jacob unites their qualities into a single spiritual structure.

“And Joseph is the gathering of the twelve tribes.”

Joseph serves as the integrative force for the next generation.

“And through this they were saved from Esau and his chiefs.”

Their unity protected them from the forces of spiritual fragmentation.

“And Jacob and Joseph, though above this, inserted themselves to repair future generations.”

Despite their lofty spiritual standing, they engaged the lower realms for the sake of all Israel.

“And this itself is the meaning of Joseph’s dreams, for he included himself within them.”

Joseph’s dreams reflect his role within the collective destiny of his brothers.

“Binding sheaves.”

The brothers’ joint activity symbolizes collective spiritual refinement.

“And through my sheaf rising, your sheaves will circle around it.”

Joseph’s elevation uplifts all the tribes.

“Meaning he elevates all of them.”

His spiritual ascent benefits the entire nation.

“And the sages said: just as grain cannot be without straw, a dream cannot be without extraneous elements.”

Dreams contain distortions just as grain is surrounded by husks.

“The hint is that grain is hidden within husks and straw.”

Prophecy through dreams appears clothed in less refined forms.

“So prophecy through dreams becomes clothed in garments and lower levels.”

Dreams convey divine messages through layers of symbolism.

“Therefore the level of the dream was below their true spiritual level.”

The brothers were spiritually higher than the medium through which the dream was shown.

“And only for the sake of the tribes.”

The dream descended to their level for their benefit.

“And so it is written in Parashat Miketz: ‘the dreams that He interpreted for them.’”

These dreams were bestowed for the tribes’ needs.

“Meaning for their need and for their sake.”

Joseph’s revelations served the collective destiny.

“For Joseph is the aspect of Shabbat, in which the divine flow comes without contractions.”

Joseph channels unfiltered holiness.

“And it is written: ‘Today you will not find it in the field.’”

Shabbat is above the field‑labor of refinement, just as Joseph transcends worldly mixtures.

In summary: Joseph’s dream of binding sheaves symbolizes the gathering and elevation of holy sparks. Esau represents the unrefined field, but Jacob and Joseph—each an integrating force—stand above the husks of physicality. Joseph, embodying Shabbat, uplifts all the tribes, and his dreams descend into symbolic form for their benefit, guiding the refinement of future generations.
