Revealing hidden holy letters everywhere
"And he encountered the place (vayifga ba-makom), and he took from the stones of the place" (Bereishis 28:11).
The Sefas Emes opens with Yaakov's arrival at "the place," reading "vayifga" and "the stones" as keys to the inner avodah of tefillah.
In the Midrash: "this 'encounter' (pegiah) is tefillah" — why do they call Hashem "Makom" (the Place)? Because He is the place of the world.
Chazal read "vayifga" as prayer, and explain that Hashem is called "Makom" because He contains the world; the world does not contain Him.
And this is the foundation of tefillah, as Chazal said: "a person should always arrange the praise of the Makom and afterward pray" (Berachos 32a), for the essence of the avodah of tefillah is to clarify that He is the place of the world.
The very purpose of prayer is to recognize and make clear that Hashem encompasses all — that everything exists within Him.
And this is the meaning of "he took from the stones of the place" — as is said, the letters [of the alphabet] are called "stones" (avanim).
Drawing on the Sefer Yetzirah, the Sefas Emes identifies the "stones" Yaakov took with the otiyos — the letters through which the world was created.
And the reason is that everything was created through the twenty-two letters of the Torah.
All of creation was formed through the 22 letters of the Hebrew alef-beis, the building blocks of the Torah.
And "stone" denotes the foundation of the building.
A stone is the cornerstone, the foundational element upon which a structure rests.
And in every place there is found a foundation and a "stone" through which that thing was created.
Every created thing has an inner "stone" — the divine letter-energy that brought it into being and sustains it.
"And he took (vayikach)" is as it is written, "a good taking (lekach tov) I have given you" (Mishlei 4:2), and "and he placed (vayasem)" is an expression of arranging.
The "taking" alludes to taking hold of the Torah, and the "placing" of the stones means setting them in order — arranging the divine letters.
And Yaakov, in every place, found the foundation and root of the "stone" — that is, the divine power found there.
Yaakov's spiritual greatness was his ability to uncover, wherever he went, the hidden divine letter-force embedded in that place.
And it is written: "for with the stones of the field is your covenant" (Iyov 5:23) — that there are stones and letters hidden and concealed even in the field and the wilderness.
Even in the most desolate, ungoverned places there lie buried "stones" — concealed holy letters waiting to be revealed.
Therefore it is written that when Lavan pursued him, [Yaakov] said to his brethren "gather stones" (Bereishis 31:46), for Yaakov's descent to Lavan was to extract the "swallowed" [holiness] from his mouth.
Yaakov's whole sojourn with Lavan was a mission to draw out the holy sparks Lavan had "swallowed"; gathering stones symbolizes reclaiming those hidden holy letters.
And when [Lavan] pursued him, [Yaakov] understood that he still needed to extract more "stones" from him.
Lavan's very pursuit signaled to Yaakov that there remained more holy sparks to be redeemed from him.
Just as it was in Mitzrayim — the plunder of Egypt and the plunder of the sea, when [the Egyptians] returned to pursue them at the sea.
The same pattern recurred at the Exodus: Bnei Yisrael took spoils first from Egypt and then, when the Egyptians pursued them, a second, greater plunder at the Yam Suf — each round extracting more holiness.
And I later found in the Yalkut on Iyov that they expounded this verse regarding Yaakov: "with the stones of the field... and the beast of the field will be at peace (hishlimah) with you" (Iyov 5:23) — for that wicked one (Lavan) made peace with him.
The Midrash applies the verse's promise — that even the "beast of the field" will make peace — to Yaakov, whose avodah of redeeming the hidden stones brought even the wicked Lavan to make a covenant of peace.
And it is written "Yegar Sahadusa" (Bereishis 31:47) — [alluding to] those letters of the Torah found within a person.
Even the Aramaic name Lavan gave the stone-heap hints at the holy letters; the "witness-mound" testifies to the otiyos of Torah embedded within a person.
Yaakov brought [them] forth from potential into actuality, as above.
Yaakov's lifework was to take the latent holy letters concealed in every place and person and bring them into full, actualized revelation.
Summary: "Vayifga ba-makom" is tefillah, whose essence is to clarify that Hashem is the "Makom" — the Place that contains the world. The "stones" Yaakov took are the otiyos, the 22 letters through which all was created; each thing has its foundational "stone," its inner divine spark. Yaakov's greatness was to uncover these hidden letters everywhere — even in field and wilderness, even within Lavan, whose holiness he extracted like the later plunder of Egypt and the sea — bringing the concealed holy letters from potential into actuality.
