Unity of Forces Toward God

Vayigash · תרל"ד (1873) · Essay 2

Devotion · Bitul · Shabbat · Divine Unity · Spiritual Vision

“In the Midrash: ‘I shall go down with you… so that Joseph will place his hand upon your eyes.’”

The verse is interpreted as teaching that God accompanies a person in descent, with Joseph symbolizing the force that gathers and focuses all inner powers toward the Divine.

“This means that when a person gathers all his powers toward God — this is called ‘Joseph,’ upon which blessing and increase rest, for the vessel that holds blessing is peace.”

Joseph represents the inner unification of energies, and such wholeness becomes the proper container for Divine blessing.

“So too, on the holy Sabbath, the six weekdays are blessed from it through self-nullification, as all six days submit themselves to the Sabbath.”

Sabbath serves as the spiritual center; when the weekdays ‘yield’ to it, they receive their blessing.

“And this is the counsel in exile: to gather all one’s powers toward God.”

Even in constriction, unity of intention becomes a pathway to spiritual elevation.

“‘Upon your eyes’—the human eye signifies intellectual and spiritual perception, and when a person desires, at minimum, to cleave to God and direct all powers to Him…”

The ‘eye’ symbolizes the orientation of consciousness; proper intention aligns the mind fully with the Divine.

“—the Name of Heaven rests upon him.”

Such alignment draws a sanctifying Divine presence.

“And this is the meaning of ‘He will place his hand upon your eyes,’ as explained above.”

The gesture symbolizes the unifying and sanctifying focus of all human faculties toward God.

The Sefat Emet teaches that Joseph symbolizes the gathering of all inner powers into unity, which becomes the vessel for blessing. Sabbath expresses this same principle, as the weekdays yield to it and receive their life from it. In exile, this inward unification becomes essential. The ‘eyes’ represent perception; when intention is directed wholly toward God, the Divine Name rests upon the person.
