Spiritual Mastery Through Trials
Joseph · Free Will · Overcoming Evil · Divine Kingship · Exile Preparation
“In the verse: ‘And Joseph harnessed his chariot,’ etc.”
The Sefat Emet opens by noting the significance of Joseph personally readying his chariot, hinting to a spiritual posture of mastery and preparation.
“For the human being was created to rule over all creation, as it is written: ‘And they shall rule over the fish of the sea,’ etc., ‘You placed all beneath his feet.’”
The human was designed to be a spiritual sovereign over creation, with all beings intended to be subordinate to him.
“Thus he rides upon them, and they form a chariot for him.”
Creation becomes an instrument through which the human being expresses divine purpose.
“And this is so when he accepts the yoke of Heaven, submitting himself to the Blessed Creator.”
Human mastery is possible only when rooted in humility before God.
“So too all created beings become nullified before the Blessed Creator through the human being.”
The human serves as the conduit through which the world channels itself toward God.
“And this can only happen through trials, in which a person overcomes the evil inclination.”
Mastery over creation depends on inner moral victories.
“Through this he becomes ruler and rider over this world.”
Conquering the self leads to genuine spiritual authority.
“And this was Joseph’s reward—that he ruled in Egypt.”
Joseph’s moral steadfastness earned him dominion in the physical realm.
“And this served as a preparation for the exile.”
Joseph’s rise laid the spiritual groundwork for Israel’s survival in Egypt.
“For the Children of Israel could not have escaped the impurity of Egypt had Joseph’s trial not preceded them, through which he ruled Egypt and became master over all the sitra achra.”
Joseph’s personal victory over corruption subdued Egypt’s spiritual dangers for the nation.
“And the level of our father Jacob, peace be upon him, was above nature.”
Jacob’s sanctity was too elevated to engage directly with Egypt’s impurity.
“And this could be sustained only through Joseph.”
Joseph acted as the bridge between Jacob’s transcendence and the natural world.
“As it says, ‘And he harnessed,’ etc., meaning that all were bent beneath his hand.”
Joseph’s authority subdued the forces of the physical world.
“And he went up to meet Israel, etc.”
Joseph elevated Egypt in order to welcome his father’s holiness.
“Consequently, all became nullified before the collective of Israel afterward.”
Joseph’s work enabled the whole nation to remain spiritually intact.
“And in the Midrash: ‘Joseph again… I have with me “How great is Your goodness,” etc.’”
The Sefat Emet connects Joseph to the hidden good reserved for the righteous.
“For the hidden good comes through struggles and trials in this world.”
Spiritual reward is earned through earthly effort.
“As written elsewhere: the reward of the World to Come depends on this world, for there is a depth of good and a depth of evil, and they are interdependent.”
Greater spiritual potential requires confronting greater challenge.
“And because Joseph remained righteous in Egypt, he merited the aspect of ‘rav’—greatness.”
Joseph’s steadfastness granted him immense spiritual stature.
The Sefat Emet teaches that Joseph’s moral victories gave him mastery over the world, enabling him to prepare Egypt for Israel’s exile and secure hidden spiritual good for the nation.
