Torah and Mitzvah Relationship
Torah · Mitzvot · Judah · Spiritual Preparation
“In the Midrash Tanchuma: ‘And he sent Judah before him,’ see there.”
The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash, which explains why Jacob sent Judah ahead, hinting that this act contains deeper spiritual significance.
“The explanation of the matter is according to the verse: ‘A commandment is a lamp, and the Torah is light.’”
He grounds the teaching in the classic distinction: mitzvot are like lamps, vessels that hold and express the illumination, while Torah is the inner light itself.
“And Jacob, who embodies the quality of Torah, could not descend to Egypt except through the precedence of Judah, who embodies the mitzvot and the Oral Torah; for the mitzvot are emissaries, the aspect of the body which is the garment—the 248 positive commandments, etc.”
The Sefat Emet explains that Jacob, representing pure Torah-light, cannot enter the constricted, dark environment of Egypt without the protective and preparatory framework of mitzvot. Judah, symbolizing mitzvot and the Oral Torah, serves as the ‘body’ that carries and safeguards the inner ‘soul’ of Torah.
“But the inner essence is the light of Torah.”
This clarifies the structure: mitzvot are the outer vessels, but the Torah is the internal spiritual illumination they reveal and protect.
“And likewise, all the preparation of the Children of Israel in this world—who are emissaries of mitzvah—is hinted at by ‘He sent Judah before him.’ For Israel are called ‘Yehudim,’ and they repair the worlds as a preparation for the future, as it is said: ‘A new Torah shall go forth from Me.’”
The Sefat Emet extends the teaching: Just as Judah prepares the way for Jacob, so Israel as a whole prepares the world through mitzvot. Their role is cosmic repair, creating vessels capable of receiving the future, higher revelation of Torah.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Judah (mitzvot, Oral Torah) prepares the way for Jacob (inner Torah light). Mitzvot act as vessels enabling divine light to enter constricted realms, and Israel’s mission is to prepare creation for the future, higher revelation of “a new Torah.”
